two Gato kits? I know it has to be lengthened and add some width (maybe)...IS THIS A PIPE DREAM OR CAN IT BE DONE. I am one of a couple of guys that has cut a Gato to make a Tambor so the Nautilus is just one more exercise in masochistic modeling.

I have the Iron Shipwright (ex Nautilus) model in 1:350 scale ...

June 30 2009, 2:43 PM

... and I have compared it with the 1:350 scale Balao by Toms Modelworks. In addition to the hull length difference there is also difference in the hull shape. It is "beefier". Add to that there is a intermediate deck which the conning tower sits. Not saying that it can't be done, but it isn't a splice together job. You will likely need a set of lines (I think Maryland Silver may have a set) and a supply of Evergreen & putty to do the job properly.

You could also make it from an aircraft carrier...

but why would you? They are very different boats.

OK, masochistic modeling tendencies are

under control...LOL. I suppose I will wait ten or fifteen years for the kit to come out.

You could use larg diameter tubing

just secure the sides of the sub to the tubing and trace the outline onto the tube. Do this for both sides. Cut along the dotted line.
