WWII U.S. sub experts

I'm building the Trumpeter 1/144 Gato 1941 and wonder about the stantions and railings. Were they always installed? The stantions look huge and are obviously way over scale.

STANCHIONS

The railings and stanchions were only used when the submarine was in port. During patrol they were stowed away. reason for this was that when submerged they would vibrate and cause noise that the enemy could hear......anyhting the protruded on the deck that could be stowed was ....

about the deck stanchions being removed. Makes perfect sense to me as cavitation (noise) would occcur. Seems this was spoken about before. BTW what about the fore and stern masts to?
