At one time the religions used to be the governments, but they abused their very extensive powers and "their teeth were then pulled" by the current type of (more or less) secular governments. What we now call the Hebrew bible (translated first into approximate Greek, many other languages later, and now called the "Old" Testament) used to be the laws of the land (plus what the Romans wanted) while Jesus was teaching.
..... For example, Islam was invented in the 7th century, and their current practices must be expected to be, (and are?) about 600 years behind Christianity. Compare the current Islam believers' views with what about 600 years ago was the thinking of so-called "Christian" believers.
