My view has generally been that to participate in "democracy" is to consent to being ruled.
The thing is we don't consent to being ruled by those we elect. We consent to be ruled by the system which gives the illusion that our vote makes a difference.
I believe our "governments" are puppets, so "voting" is like cheering for one of the wrestlers in professional wrestling.
