Response to You're acting like a religious zealot without a clue
I'd just like to comment a wee bit on the "blanket" theory ...
These climate change zealots can't seem to get a grip on the various claims they make and lump together. The pushers of the theories ALSO ... intentionally mix up terms so that they can pull anything out of their hats, mix it all together and say, "THERE you go: PROOF!"
Phred himself appears to be a victim of this concerted bamboozlement, for he said, "It's warming because of gases that are being pumped into the atmosphere by mankind. These gases form a sort of "blanket" that reflects the sun's rays away from the earth and also keep those that do penetrate inside.
"sort of" is a good indication that the person speaking doesn't know WHAT he is speaking about ... right?
There are TWO different mechanisms at play (in the global warmalist theories). One of them is reflection ... and the other is absorption/re-radiation ... but they like to mix these up to create confusion.
Some gases are reflective ... and look a bit like ice when seen from space. These are translucent and cause light rays to reflect off of them. Sulphur dioxide is such a reflective gas. Blamed for causing "acid rain" (which threatened many areas around the Great Lakes") during the 1970's ... this gas came out of coal burning and -in an effort to clean up coal burning plants- it got blamed for everything ... including global cooling.
Now, THAT is probably true to a great extent because volcanic eruptions belch out huge volumes of sulphur dioxide and are KNOWN to cause global cooling (for a few years) after major eruptions occur.
Reflective gases (or substances like tiny particles of tinfoil in the air) will reflect heat both ways -out to space from the sun and back to earth from the earth- but the NET RESULT of these substances to our planet is that ... it causes cooling more than warming. (You may have noticed planes in the sky today very often leave very long trails behind themselves that don't "evaporate" like they used to. This is because stuff has been added to the fuel to cause the vapor trails to contain large amounts of reflective substances that spread out all over ... causing the sky to be filled with a haze. The reason they put this stuff into the fuel is to CAUSE global cooling -in the vain belief that the earth is getting too hot! And ... it's working too. The earth is actually getting a bit cooler because of this awful stuff the planes are ejecting into the atmosphere.)
Clouds in the sky are reflective. When a sky is very cloudy, the earth underneath becomes cooler.
But SO2 is not a greenhouse gas. CO2 is a greenhouse gas.
Since volcanic eruptions spew out vast quantities of BOTH these gases ... it immediately becomes one and the same thing to climate zealots with little better critical acumen than a fruit fly.
CO2 -the greenhouse gas- ABSORBS certain wavelengths of infrared rays that radiate from the earth ... warms up from that absorption and then radiates its warmth outward ... all around itself. You might liken it to a frying pan: you put a cold pan on the stove, it absorbs heat (and "blocks" that heat for a time --- while it is absorbing the heat) ... but once heated, it becomes essentially the same as the burner it sits on and radiates heat all around itself the same as the burner would if it had no pan on top of it. In fact, if you put a very large aluminum pan on top of a burner, it will actually cause the burner to become COOLER than it would be if there was nothing sitting on top of itself. This is the "heat sink" principle at work. Stereo amps use this method to keep output transistors cool (and so do computer CPU's). Because the sink INCREASES surface area ... it causes more heat to be lost from the sink than would be lost by the bare component.
So ... reflective gases cause cooling ... while greenhouse gases (supposedly) cause warming because of their absorptive abilities.
But then there's a THIRD confusion thrown in because of labeling ...
CO2 is called a "greenhouse gas" but the mechanism of absorption/re-radiation has absolutely nothing in common with the way actual greenhouses manage to capture and retain heat. This confusion too --- is probably intentionally exploited because most people don't have a keen awareness of "how stuff works" and simply associate terminology.
The ONLY true association between CO2 and greenhouses is that CO2 is used profusely in greenhouses to make plants grow better!
The REAL greenhouse effect is caused by entrapment of heat. You've likely noticed this effect when you open your car on a very bright sunny day and a blast of heat greats you from inside the car? Well, the REASON why it's hotter inside of the car than it is outside of the car is because there's no wind or moisture inside of the car to carry the heat AWAY ... and so it builds up to a significantly higher temperature inside of the car. Outside, there are pools, rocks, earth, trees etc. ... which will absorb heat from wind and therefore, the sun's heat is dissipated in the great outdoors but builds up in confined spaces like cars or greenhouses.
Now then ...
People like Phred will often point to the planet Venus as a perfect example of what happens when there is too much CO2 in the atmosphere.
Venus is blanketed with a THICK layer of CO2 ... has an abundance of SO2 (which makes it shine in the night sky from sun reflection) ... and is hot as a firecracker on its surface. The temperature on Venus is hot enough to melt lead.
But here's a factor you'll NEVER hear mentioned by anyone in the "scientific" community ...
What about the cores of the planets themselves?
We know that the inside of the earth is extremely hot and that's why we get volcanic eruptions.
We know that Venus has tons more volcanic eruption than the earth does. At least with the earth, we can identify continents that have changed very little over the last 2000 years but not so on Venus. Venus is so fraught with volcanic eruption, its landscape is CONSTANTLY changing ... and it has no continents or water bodies.
What CAUSES volcanic eruptions? INTERNAL CORE HEAT.
So if you take into consideration just how MUCH heat is being GENERATED in the core of a planet (through sustained nuclear reactions) ... well then it doesn't take much to figure out that if a planet is GENERATING more heat than it loses to the outside via infrared radiation ... that planet is going to get VERY HOT!
Venus is surrounded by an INSULATING BLANKET of pure CO2 ... and then higher up in its atmosphere, it has a thick layer of reflecting SO2 -(both gases from heavy volcanic activity)- which .... keeps the SUNS RAYS out ... but KEEPS PLANET HEAT IN!
Venus then, is NOT heated by the sun; it's staying hot from its own internal nuclear heat engine.
The EARTH has an internal heat engine as well but it's very weak in comparison to the heat engine in Venus.
The earth loses more heat than its core produces and relies on the sun to keep it warmed up enough for us to live here. If we were to blanket ourselves with reflective gases ... we would COOL down. Venus heats up but we cool down. If we were to blanket ourselves with CO2 gas ... we wouldn't know if we'd heat or cool because we'd all die: CO2 is HEAVIER than air and would suffocate us all! But you've got to remember that CO2 and SO2 come from volcanoes primarily. Our planet has far too little internal heat to create enough volcanoes to blanket us in either of those two gases.
