      the gramophones?

A huge old swivel-horn connected to a diaphragm and a needle big enough to use for a toothpick?

In fact ....... if one was out of needles, a toothpick WOULD work ....... though, with highly reduced audibility.

My dad used to use the needles for holding plate glass in window frames. Just tack them in lightly alongside the pane and the putty in around the glass to seal it.

The gramophones were wound up with a crank and held "perfect" speed by means of a weighted friction governor. When the mechanism broke, a well paced cranker was in high demand.
