Kind of unrelated, kind of related. I'm reading a book on yoga, and chakras and qi. A couple of interesting points that your comment on selflessness reminded me of.
One, was that the same external behavior can be motivated by different reasons. This was a comment on selflessness. There is one aspect that is very self denying, a victim type of selflessness. Being selfless due to feeling unworthy. And another, a selflessness that is based on a good sense of self esteem, but a virtuous sacrifice.
As well it spoke of how a character trait can be negative, if it is either missing (blocked), or in overabundance (too open). Sexual affection was an example given. There is a healthy middle ground between inhibition and promiscuity.
