1.) Does anyone have a spoo that eats dirt?
Bear, 4 months old, loves to eat dirt!
Any suggestions?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2.) There are certainly both medical and behavioral causes
that can be behind dirt eating or any pica.
Some medical reasons include:
liver disease, iron deficiency,
Cushing's, obsessive compulsive behavior,
primary gastrointestinal maldigestive and malabsorptive disorders (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency,
severe inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal lymphosarcoma), diabetes mellitus.
Many of these are unlikely in a young dog,
but good to review with your vet.
How do you feed Bear?
Can you easily distract Bear from doing it?
Do littermates have similar behavior?
Once the medical causes have been explored and eliminated,
and if it's behavioral, it might be a sign of boredom.
Perhaps putting Bear's food in a kong or other toy.
This would help if it's a need for oral stimulation,
and eating food is spread over more time
and there's less time for eating dirt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3.) Both of ours eat dirt,
and many of the dogs we walk with do, too.

We have a thorough annual blood analysis done
on both girls and they don't show a deficiency.

If you are sure the nutrition is OK
and he gets a vitamin supplement,
it may be boredom as Karen "The Pack" suggests.

Or, as our vet says, some dogs like to eat dirt
and you won't be able to stop them.

But make sure you check nutrition deficiencies first.

Grandma/Grandpa quotes:
Two saying,
one from my Dad tho.....
"You're going to eat a ton of dirt
before u die anyway"
(if something looked like it had a spec on it)

5 second rule - "If it falls on the floor,
and it's been there less than 5 seconds,
it doesn't count...eat it!"

Grandma/Grandpa quotes:
When you have two people that don't usually get along together,

you know one day they are fussing
and the next day they are buddies,

well the day they were buddies
mom would say,
"oh they are drinking out of the same straw today".

And ,
if you will do this or that for me
I will dance at your wedding

Or
if you will do this for me
I will give you a gold monkey

I never did get that gold monkey

When I was little,
I remember time and time again
when I would be eating with my Gramma K,
and I would drop something on the floor -- she'd pick it right up and eat it.

I was in shock at first.
She always said, tho, that after all,
"We eat over at least a ton of dirt every day,
so it doesn't really matter."

Well, years later,
after eating lots of stuff that had fallen on the ground
and remembering her motto,
I realized that "over" could mean "over the top of,"
as in: Under our feet.
I didn't eat dropped food as freely after that insight.

I was told that the police could see you in the stop lights if you cross the walk way without let the light change to green

I was also told that if I kept look'n up at the plains,
when I was walk'n they'd come down and get me.

Silly, what we beleive as children!

Girl, that was so pretty

February 22 2009, 7:18 AM

I can't think of things that I was told...

OK, my dad used to tell me that he would rather owe "it" (birthday money, tooth coins that he had "borrowed") to me all my life rather then try and cheat me out of it.

Funny, thinking back, he always insisted I pay him back right away.

Which brings to mind another ditty of his,
"Do as I say, not as I do"
(What child of the 70's didn't hear that one?)

One!life > My foster mother would say that too!
And when she took me to the dermatology

[linked image]
(Who stick me in the face with needle of alcohol that burn-d)

And then she'd (steal-place in her pocket) samples of bars of soap.

that's when she'd tell me that.
Follow'd with this: Don't you ever let me caught you doing that.

Vince could probably clearly explain this.

February 22 2009, 12:47 PM

I'll try to muddle through.

I have a Photobucket account.
I can put pic's from my hard drive to my photobucket page.
Photobucket assigns link-addresses for each picture (four different kinds)

Use the link with the < HTML code > (not the [ and [/ type links)

I see that there is a photobucket link at the bottom of the "respond to this message" window where I write my message. You could try that to get you started I bet.

Deborah who so hopes Vince comes and gives you a flow-sheet of directions.

One!life > I wonder'd, what that was, cool- something new for me!

I'm very sloooow so, this may take me some time to do-and understand.
May even have to have someone else, help me from here.
I've wape'd things off my computer before,
so I not keen on try'n new things, by self.

deblife: Is it free?
What do they charge if not?

That would be good,(to place my picture and documents)

Ok, let me give it a shot......

February 22 2009, 9:56 PM

Click on Reply to this post but don't write anything (right away).

Underneath the reply box you'll see

Image Services Photobucket.com. Click on that -(it's a link to photobucket).

Now you'll see a little sign-in box with username and password.

Under that, you see a green button that says, Join Now!

Click on the green button.

Put in a user name of your choice. I will put in ......VERN_KLEMPEN to try this myself so that I can continue to give instructions. (Can't have any spaces so I put in a _ instead of a space.

For the password I will use nicnacpattywhack. I copy and paste that twice ....... once in each slot.

Then I'll do Next.

I now have to put in a valid email address. I'll put in one of my Yahoo email addresses.

Next, I enter the other information. I'm born on June 10 1914. Gender is female and country is Greece. (This is all bogus information just to keep them satisfied).

As a precaution -so I don't lose this bogus information, just in case I might need it again, I press the PrtScr key on the keyboard to copy the desktop and then go to Start/Programs/Accessories/Paint .......... and click on Paint. This brings up the Microsoft Paint program. Then I click on Edit at the top and then on Paste. This gives me an image of my desktop, showing the photobucket information in the middle.

[linked image]

Next, I click on File at the top and then on Save As ....

This brings up My Pictures and in the File name slot, I type ........bogus photobucket account ........ and then click Save. Should I happen to need to REMEMBER any of this BS, it will be available in that saved file.

Now I go back to the photobucket page and click Next.

Next, I enter the code I see in the box above the yellow slot. In my case it's ....k2m5ek ...... but that changes each time the page is accessed so you have to copy-type the one you see there when you do it yourself.

Then, click ...... I accept.

Right away, the page is empty as there are no images uploaded yet.

[linked image]

I will upload my first image. I go to where I stored the first printscreen of my registering information and upload that.

I click on Browse. Then I click on the down button next to the slot at the top to get a drop-down list. (I'm trying to find the folder where I saved that image to). I find it and double click it.

[linked image]

Then I click on the Upload button. It takes awhile with the hourglass sticking. Finally, it's in place.

Now I do the same for all the other images I want to upload from my computer.

The next step is to make connection with those stored images so I can "embed" them into this post.

I go to http://photobucket.com/ and at the top right of the page I put in my user name ....... VERN_KLEMPEN. (If this was a permanent serious account, I would put a check mark in the "remember me" box. That password is a killer to have to put in each time!~)

Then I put in the password ..........nicnacpattywhack ......... and then click on ......log in. Now I'm into my home page. I can copy links from there to this post.

As I put my cursor over an image, I get a popout box. For this (and all N54 forums) I can use the "direct link" option. I click on that to highlight it and then right click to do copy. Now I paste it into the correct place on this post.

To do more uploading now, I choose the "old uploader". (I've not had much luck with the bulk uploader). I click on .............old uploader.

There are 3 Browse slots. I Click on one of the Browse buttons, click on the down arrow button to get a drop-down list and then click on Desktop (which is where I stored the LAST image I'm going to paste in here now). Then I click ......Upload.

And here we are!

[linked image]

To check now, whether my images actually SHOW on this page, I click on Preview button under this post. Everything looks good so I click on the Edit button to get back to posting.

If you want to give this bogus account a try -for practice- go to www.photobucket.com.

Enter ...........VERN_KLEMPEN.......... for user name
Enter ..........nicnacpattywhack ......... for password

Now you can upload some test image of your own and see if you can get it into a post.

Good luck,
Vince
