1.) Does anyone have a spoo that eats dirt?
Bear, 4 months old, loves to eat dirt!
Any suggestions?

2.) There are certainly both medical and behavioral causes
that can be behind dirt eating or any pica.
Some medical reasons include:
liver disease, iron deficiency,
Cushing's, obsessive compulsive behavior,
primary gastrointestinal maldigestive and malabsorptive disorders (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency,
severe inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal lymphosarcoma), diabetes mellitus.
Many of these are unlikely in a young dog,
but good to review with your vet.
How do you feed Bear?
Can you easily distract Bear from doing it?
Do littermates have similar behavior?
Once the medical causes have been explored and eliminated,
and if it's behavioral, it might be a sign of boredom.
Perhaps putting Bear's food in a kong or other toy.
This would help if it's a need for oral stimulation,
and eating food is spread over more time
and there's less time for eating dirt.

3.) Both of ours eat dirt,
and many of the dogs we walk with do, too.
We have a thorough annual blood analysis done
on both girls and they don't show a deficiency.
If you are sure the nutrition is OK
and he gets a vitamin supplement,
it may be boredom as Karen "The Pack" suggests.
Or, as our vet says, some dogs like to eat dirt
and you won't be able to stop them.
But make sure you check nutrition deficiencies first.

Grandma/Grandpa quotes:
Two saying,
one from my Dad tho.....
"You're going to eat a ton of dirt
before u die anyway"
(if something looked like it had a spec on it)
5 second rule - "If it falls on the floor,
and it's been there less than 5 seconds,
it doesn't count...eat it!"

Grandma/Grandpa quotes:
When you have two people that don't usually get along together,
you know one day they are fussing
and the next day they are buddies,
well the day they were buddies
mom would say,
"oh they are drinking out of the same straw today".
And ,
if you will do this or that for me
I will dance at your wedding
Or
if you will do this for me
I will give you a gold monkey
I never did get that gold monkey

When I was little,
I remember time and time again
when I would be eating with my Gramma K,
and I would drop something on the floor -- she'd pick it right up and eat it.
I was in shock at first.
She always said, tho, that after all,
"We eat over at least a ton of dirt every day,
so it doesn't really matter."
Well, years later,
after eating lots of stuff that had fallen on the ground
and remembering her motto,
I realized that "over" could mean "over the top of,"
as in: Under our feet.
I didn't eat dropped food as freely after that insight.
