Great topic

This is the great intangible, Mondo.
We can feel fear, or the swift residue of its effects and observe the power it has to stop embryo actions in their tracks, but isn't 'fear' itself an auto-reaction with roots somewhere deep within?

A greater need will suppress fear - a desperate mother of any species will risk her life to get/ take food for her hungry wee ones, yet at other times she may be the model of self preservation.
There must be many types or aspects of fear and its use to cow people are well known to those who choose to terrorise others. It has been said that 'politicians should fear the people - not the other way about'

The root of all fears would seem to be the fear of 'death' - of personal extinction - and if that one could be literally laid to rest, all the other accompanying, artificial restrictions utilised to control people would vanish overnight, religion among them. It is little wonder then that those folk who have some ability as natural mediums have been themselves feared by 'church' authorities desperate to preserve their self-created hold on the popular mind. This barrier was publically reinforced as brutally and bloodily as possible as these two fears repeatedly clashed.

The film itself, I find unwatchable due to the techniques used - movement, changing camera focus, additional noise, disjointed points, rapidly changing talking heads - all devices to seperate and distract the viewer, while claiming to inform them.
But a great topic that would shed much light on ourselves if it could be honestly expanded and discussed.

Fear.

As Seoc said: A great topic. Eastern philosophies addressed fear extensively. The Dao with it's resultant sytems of Chigong and Tiajiquan are all about self control. Maintaining calmness through breathing and relaxation while engaged in fierce actions are paramount to survival. The eight trigrams introduce the nature of balance and harmony.

Daoist teaching are about non-judemental observations, acceptance of events with a open mind, caring for ones health and a very long and productive life lived in harmony. Achieveing the state of Wuji: no extremities. Fear is an extremety.

Fear

... the mortal enemy of reason

propositions which imply their own negation are necessarily false
whereas propositions implied by their own negation are necessarily true

rejected and denied by many, accepted and embraced by few : falsifiability
- it is not what we (think we) know that matters, it is what we can show true that does
as the maxim demands; truth is demonstrably fact and fact is demonstrably true
everything else ... mere BS -

New!! Improved!! Now With CDEH-Formula!!

CD: short for inevitability
