Re: Ferrets in Bellingham

Hi Sara,
I don't know of much very close to there...the closest I know of is Ferret City (http://www.ferretcity.org/) in Burlington, which is still quite a ways from you.
Anyone else know of something up that way?

Yeah, I checked that site out...and called the Ferrets NW-Bellingham number, but it has been disconnected. I also tried the Everett branch, but they are also no longer available (it is now a phone number for a UW research center. Thanks for the thought!!!
I know it's not nearly as much fun. But if all else fails I'd suggest going to one of the local petstores that has ferrets, like Petco. At least that way you can interact with them. If the employees are nice they'll usually let you hold them too. It's not nearly the same as volunteering somewhere, but at least you can get a better idea if a ferret is the right pet for you. And then when you're ready to adopt, you can make a trip of it and head south to a shelter. Good luck!
I emailed the woman incharge of Ferret City--I decided that traveling there once a week or so from Bellingham isn't really that bad--and I am still awaiting her response. I also thought of maybe seeing if I could volunteer in a local Petco, but I would really like to work with people who REALLY know what they are doing. The last time I was in a Petco, I asked if I could hold the ferrets. They agreed, and as I began to make conversation with the employee, he said that he "really didn't know much about ferrets". The time before that, the employee that had opened the cage for me actaully had once owned a ferret, but still didn't seem like he really knew what she was talking about (I felt like I knew more than she did!!!). I also called the Whatcom Country Humane Society and asked if they knew of any ferret shelters/rescues in or around Bellingham, and she said that the closest was Burlington, or I could drive to Seattle every once and a while.
Hopefully I will hear back from Ferret City soon!!! Thank you guys for your help!!!!
The sad thing is, you probably already know more than most Petco employees. It has been my experience that Petco employees aren't the brightest when it comes to ferrets. I can only assume that it's a training issue, but that really doesn't excuse it. I often drop in to local Petco locations and visit the fuzzies. Every once in a while, the conditions warrant a complaint to the manager, or worse, an email to Petco. I do know that they act on their emails.
Anyway, good luck on finding a place to volunteer. Maybe you could volunteer at Petco now and then- you'd probably be a huge benefit to them, and the fuzzies always need love!

I'd give her some time...the Inland NW Ferret Show was this weekend...I don't know if she was going, but it is possible that she was busy preparing for that.

I talked to Ferret City today....she is not in need of volunteers.......
But I guess thats a good thing because it means that she doesn't have a whole lot of fuzzies, which means that there are less babies in need of homes!
It's well worth the drive to come down and visit the fuzzies! Especially since we have such cuties all the time. Then again.. this is how my fuzzy number increased from 5 to 12 in a short period of time.. but what can I say.. I'm a sucker for a cute face and a fat tummy!
I would love to come down and visit....and was thinking...my spring break starts on the 14th....so maybe sometime over spring break I can stop in and meet some of you guys and see the babies! It's really hard for me with classes and work to make it south frequently!
