I'm talking about frozen day-old chicks to feed my ferrets, of course!
I know people on the east coast who mail-order them, but the places I've found shipping is outrageous unless you're buying LOTS.
For example, at www.rodentpro.com, I can buy a bag of 25 chicks for $3.00.
That's the good news.
The bad news it that it'll cost $55.00 to ship that $3.00 bag of chicks...
www.miceonice.com is cheaper for shipping (they don't have chicks, but do sell frozen mice), but more expensive for the mice, so it's a wash.
So, I'm looking for someplace, ideally local so I can avoid shipping, where I can get good quality frozen whole-prey for my ferrets.
Failing that, if anyone is up for splitting an order so that we save on shipping, that would work too.
Ferrets are obligate carnivores.
That means that they MUST eat meat.
They get no nutrition at all from vegetable sources.
In the past ~20 - 30 years, ferrets in the US have been fed kibble diets, not necessarily because it's better nutrition, but because it's easier for the owners.
Prior to that, they were fed - prey animals and other meat.
In the wild, they ate - prey animals.
I do NOT feed live chicks. I buy them after they've been humanely killed and frozen.
You don't have to watch, and there isn't much in the way of leftovers.
Some ferrets won't go for it at all.
Others think it's the greatest treat in the world.
I really don't see what's so inherently worse about this than going to the market and buying a fryer chicken to cook up.
