I'm not sure whether it is generally true that males smell more than females..... If you are very concerned about smell, you may know that washing bedding (and not the ferret) is the better way to cut back on odor. When you wash a ferret, you cause their oil glands to run overtime, and they actually smell more.
2 to 3 hours of playtime per day should be fine..... it is hard to say what is the right size cage. If you go to the ferret shelter you are talking about, they should be able to point out the correct size cage. For just one ferret, a single level cage should be plenty.
It is also hard to give a total cost....maybe: $100 for ferret.....$75-150 for a cage..... what kind of accessories?? The bigger cost you tend to not think about is the vet bills. Ferrets, unfortunately, are really prone to certain kinds of cancer that can be expensive (but successful) to treat for some time...this can get expensive. You mentioned that your ferret lived to be 10....what did he eventually die from?
