Toonage’s CMW Festival Frenzy
The Kathedral – Saturday March 10, 2007
review by Steve Korsh
Canadian Music Week came to a conclusion for me with a night of Pop/Punk/Rock at The Kathedral. There was a pretty good turn out for the show, and the crowd, while not going crazy for the bands or anything like that, was very receptive and seemed to enjoy the performances most of the bands put on. The downfall of the night was that the majority of the bands had a very similar sound. Pop/Punk/Rock are three words I could use to describe all the acts that night as they all had the same sound, the same hooks and progressions, the same kind of Radio/MTV appeal that just kind of irks me the wrong way.
That being said, in all fairness there were some pretty good performances. If there was one thing that separated the bands from each other it was stage presence and the overall performance of the band. The highlight of the evening in that regard was The Buck Brothers. Based out of London, England, the band wasted no time on stage, offering song after song of good old-fashioned rock and roll. The Buck Brothers are definitely a fun band. There’s nothing really fancy to their approach except for the colourful boas they drape over their mic stands. Otherwise it’s kind of a “here we are let’s start the rock” attitude, and it made for a really entertaining show.
There were other standouts Saturday besides The Buck Brothers. The night’s opening act featured one of the more energetic performances of the night as Niagara’s Policies and Procedures took the stage. The band was tight and put everything they had into the performance. Drummer Pat Sirianni was really a pleasure to watch as he really attacks the kit and put on a great performance. Dearest took the stage afterward, and after their light show blew a fuse and turned off all the power, they recovered to have a great show; although, to be honest, I remember them more for the power outage than their music.
All the bands were good for what they were, and maybe it was just the booking of the show, but at the end of the night I kind of felt that I had just finished hearing the same band play six times in a row. The Buck Brothers were the highlight of the night for me, and I would recommend checking them out the next time they come around to Toronto.
