TORONTO - Researchers have made the first vaccine that protects against genital herpes. But there is a major catch: It works only in women and only if they have never had cold sores.
The findings, reported Sunday, are a surprise. Until now, no vaccine has ever been shown to work in one sex but not the other. Experts say this could present unexpected trouble for creating other vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases, such as AIDS.
The results were not the clear home run that the vaccine's developer, SmithKline Beecham, had hoped when it began designing the latest studies a decade ago. Further testing will almost certainly be required for the drug to be approved, assuming that the company keeps working on the product.
For women, the new vaccine proved about 75 percent effective in preventing genital herpes, a disease that affects an estimated 45 million people in the United States. The women in the study were considered at high risk for herpes because their sexual partners were infected with the virus.
"We've got a grip on the herpes virus for the first time," said Dr. Spotswood Spruance of the University of Utah, who presented his research in Toronto during the annual meeting of the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
The results mean that about 70 percent of women who would have probably become infected did not. For example, about 10 percent of women in one study who were not vaccinated developed herpes, while the rate among vaccinated women was about 3 percent.
The news wasn't so good for men. For reasons the scientists can only speculate about, infection rates among vaccinated and unvaccinated men in the study weren't significantly different.
The vaccine also didn't make much of a difference when women had already been exposed to the type of herpes virus that causes cold sores.
Two kinds of herpes virus are common in the United States. Herpes simplex virus type 1, or HSV-1, causes fever blisters on the mouth, while HSV-2 triggers sores on the genitals. Once acquired, both infections last a lifetime.
But they are so closely related that, in the two studies presented Sunday, women who had been infected with HSV-1 already had some immune protection from HSV-2. The vaccine is designed to prevent HSV-2, which affects one in five adults and one in four women in the United States. In the new research, a childhood cold sore offered about as much protection as the vaccine.
For this reason, a herpes vaccine such as the one discussed Sunday would be best targeted to adolescent girls, Spruance said, when infection rates for HSV-1 are still low. By age 35, about 65 to 70 percent of the population tests positive for HSV-1 infection, he said. Doctors would not want to rely on cold sores to protect against genital herpes infections, he said, because research on this issue has not been consistent.
"You're going to have to target the youngest population you can," said Dr. Lawrence Stanberry, director of the Center for Vaccine Development at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Stanberry was also involved in the research.
The two studies combined involved more than 3,000 volunteers in North America, Europe and Australia who were not infected with genital herpes but had a regular sexual partner who was. Each received either three doses of the vaccine or three doses of a shot that only looked like the vaccine.
Why the vaccine works in women but not men is unclear, although the researchers said it probably has something to do with differences in sexual anatomy. Perhaps the vaccine boosts the immune system so it can attack the herpes virus while still in the vagina, but it is unable to stop the virus after it gains access to the bloodstream through tiny tears in the penis.
"The results are not exactly what we expected," said Gary Dubin, who heads adolescent vaccine development for SmithKline Beecham in Belgium. He said the company is getting reaction from regulators and public health officials before deciding what to do next.
The vaccine contained a piece of the herpes virus's outer shell, designed to fool the body into thinking a person had been infected, and provoke a full-fledged immune response. It also contained a substance to gear up the immune system. Spruance theorized that previous herpes vaccines failed to work because they were not potent enough.
How sad, the goal of young people today is to sleep around. Forget trying to make the world a better place just screw around then die. In the future sex will be no more personal that a hand shake I'm sure. I WANT MORALITY BACK !!!

We don't wear chastity belts. Don't think we're going to hell for having sex. My wife and I have a great sex life (belive me). And with no worries like STD's, pregnancy, or problems of adultry.
STD's are not a result of the wrath of God. They are a result of poor choices and lack of morals - and in some cases, plain stupidity.
