Pan AM 103 - was it Justice or politics?

February 15 2001 at 10:41 AM

A libyan, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was found guilty of the 1988 bombing by a Scottish court in the Hague. His co-defendant, Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah was acquitted. What is wrong with this picture? see the Bill Blum story of this at http://www.consortiumnews.com/020601a.html

justice or politics

In a word it was politics. The first clown took it in the neck because he was from Libya (everybodys enemy) the evidence was ignored making the trial a sham.

political expediency

How can what is politically expedient with the white house and 10 Downing street be an acceptable verdict (even when the verdict convicts a convenient Libyan enemy) Does this bring closure for the victims families? Do we dare question official Washington or official London the two key political players involved? Maybe the convicted Libyan did play a part but are we naive enough to believe that he had the ability, opportunity and expertise to carry out such a mission alone.

I am sure that more than one person was involved here and agree that the Americans and Brits were careful to avoid fingering the non Libya connections for political considerations. At the same time, they likely know exactly who was responsible for the operation but the victims families will just have to be content with the one goat that was found guilty here.
