For those that aren't familiar with track jargon... "y" means yards and "m" indicates meters, indicating the distance was either a "full mile" (meaning that the distance covered was 1760 yards or 1609 meters) or the more commonly used distance in high school of 1600m. This is where hte notation "y" or "m" comes in handy.
It really doesn't make sense to run the 1600m, either run the imperial distance (1500m), or scoot back the extra 9meters and change and run the full thing.
