The Ivy League Championship in Cross Country was held today in NYC.
The men's and women's races were examples of opposite ways to win as team.
In the women's race, Princeton held all 5 top places. That is correct, the team score was 15. Pretty hard to lose that way. This is reminiscent of the Stanford men a few years back winning NCAAs by dominating the top of the race. Their 6th man was in the top 10 but didn't point.
The only San Diegans I recognize are Sammy Silva (Harvard) at 12 (17:53.7, 5:46/5k ) and Lauren Pischel 13 (17:55.6 5:46).
The men's race was completely opposite: Every runner counts from 1-5 on every team.
Here are the first, second and fifth team scores:
1 Columbia Univ 60 = 5 8 12 15 20
Total Time: 2:08:52.6 ( 12) ( 25:46.5)
Brendan Martin; Kyle Merber; Terence Prial; Justin Heck; Anthony Merra
======================================================================================
2 Princeton 61 = 3 6 11 18 23
Total Time: 2:09:03.9 ( 11) ( 25:49.8)
Brian Leung; Donn Cabral; Rob Speare; Mark Amirault; Sean Wilson
======================================================================================
5 Brown Univ 106 = 2 7 10 43 44
Total Time: 2:10:39.5 ( 12) ( 26:08.9)
Christian Escareno; Duriel Hardy; John Loeser; Austin Snyder; John Haenle
Note that both Harvard and Brown undercut Columbia with their first three, but Columbia won based on its 4 and 5, beating Princeton by just 1 point.
Harvard finished 6th in spite of having the race winner.
