Every year someone always asks for predictions. So this year I am going to do my best to accommodate that request. Some people might not like what I have to say, and thats fine. You can create your own list. I love Track and Field, and I want there to be more excitement for our sport. I will add one girls event and one boys event every week until track season starts. I will also preview certain teams that will be in the hunt for a CIF team title.
2010 Track and Field Preview
Boys 100m
10. Derrall Hunter (11.20a, Senior) Mt. Miguel
Hunter will be a major contributor for the Matador track program in the sprints and relays. If the saying holds true that history repeats itself, the Matadors could be in for a big year. The last time Mt. Miguel won CIF in track was 1988; the same year they defeated Helix in football. The 2009 football team defeated Helix 44-21; Hunter scored 5 TDs. [11.01]
9. Kenneth James (11.19a, Senior) Mt. Carmel
Kenneth had a solid 2009 season, and after a great football season 2010 should be even better. K.J. ran for a section record 424 yards against Westview this fall. This young man knows how to run. James should be in the mix for the Valley League Championships and also have a chance to be an A heat finalist for the Section finals. [11.01]
8. Ricky Seale (11.19a, Senior) Escondido
With big time D-1 football in his future, Ricky could choose to focus on one sport. Hopefully, Ricky will realize track has helped him become San Diegos all-time rusher, and compete this spring. As a sophomore, Seale ran 11.13 and definitely looks strong enough to improve on that time. [10.98]
7. Damien Williams (11.17a, Senior) Mira Mesa
Williams is another one of San Diegos premier football players. Now that it is track season Damien will look to improve upon last years success. Damien was 3rd in the Eastern League last year behind two of his teammates. Williams will likely be an A heat finalist, and a key member of the Marauders 4x100. [10.96]
6. Seth Drake (11.08a, Senior) Ramona
Drake has been a core member of the Bulldogs program the last few years. With a team title in 08 and a runner up finish in 09, the Bulldogs are looking to go out on top. Seth has had steady improvement and should finally be able to break through to the A heat Final. Also look for Seth to contend for the D-2 title. [10.91]
5. Davon Dunn (11.01a, Senior) Lincoln
Dunn will be the top returner in the Central League this season. As a three-sport athlete Davon has limited time to rest or have a preseason. After suffering an injury during football season, Davon might get some much-needed rest. If he is able to get in some quality training Double D could be a big factor come May. [10.90]
4. Shamone Fletcher (10.96aw, Junior) Mira Mesa
Shamone was a very impressive sophomore for the Marauders last season. Fletcher captured the Frosh/Soph Championship last year to go along with a 2nd place finish in the Eastern League Championships. Coach Miller has a great sprint program, and Shamone could end up being this years dark horse in the 100m Finals. [10.85]
3. * Kenny Stills (10.90a, Senior) La Costa Canyon
Arguably the countys best wide receiver, Kenny could choose to focus on Football. Stills could have visions of catching touchdowns in the Swamp rather than leaning at the tape. Kenny finished 2nd in the Avocado League finals last year behind Joe Cooks. This young man has great form and a smooth stride. If not for a hamstring injury last year, he could have been a state qualifier in the 200m. [10.78]
2. * Justin Freeman (10.80aw, Senior) Carlsbad
Freeman is the smallest of the bunch, but he packs the most punch. The work firecracker comes to mind when describing him. If Justin can gain some power in the winter, he might just gain the edge he needs to overhaul his competitors at the line. Justin was the Palomar League champ, and want to add CIF champ to his resume. Freeman has the best block start in San Diego period. If he has gains some strength to go along with his quickness, this young man is going be lethal. [10.70]
1. * Bassim El Sabawa (10.76aw, Senior) Torrey Pines
Bassim was one of San Diegos most consistent 100m sprinters. He clocked a sub-11, 8 times last season. Bassim is the only 100m state qualifier returning this season. In last years section finals Bassim and Justin Freeman had to compete in a run-off to determine the sections third qualifier. Over coming a slow start Bassim was able to win in 10.84 compared to the 10.97 he ran in the finals. That type of effort can go a long way to make a State final. [10.65]
* 2010 State Qualifier
