I posted a report based on a statistical analysis designed by a statistician with a PhD in Math about 2 years ago. It clearly showed that there is a significant advantage to targeting the 5K state final race by running over 50% of competitions at that distance or 3 miles vs 2.1 to 2.7 miles, particularly if they come toward the end of the season. Since then I have refined some aspects of it and will post a summary sometime within a few weeks.
