Paul Henderson, Grossmont thrower, dies at 58

by buzz thom

My apologies for being late with this obit notice.

Paul D. Henderson, a former weight thrower at Grossmont High School and San Diego State, died on June 11 of this year. He was born in San Diego on September 29, 1952, which made him 58 at the time of his death.

According to the San Diego Union obituary, Henderson, along with his wife, Donna, had owned and operated HOA's Only, an accounting company based in El Cajon until his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Donna Henderson, and three daughters.

He graduated from Grossmont High in 1970, where he posted best marks of 54-5 in the shot, and 152-11 in the discus. His shot distance, although a good mark, notably only ranks in a tie for 16th (!) on the Grossmont High all-time list, which says a lot about the quality of past Grossmont High throwers. He did qualify for the finals of the CIF championships, but did not place. In the disc, his best mark of 152-11 came in the CIF meet, and netted him third in the meet, at a time when only the top two were awarded a state meet berth. The 152-11 ranks Henderson 11th all-time at Grossmont.

As a junior, Henderson threw the shot 54-0 1/4. No soph mark was found, but my records of that year, 1968, only have a handful of marks sub-50, so good was the quality of area throwers then. By my count, 31 athletes in the section bested 50-feet that year.

The obit mentions that he lettered in track at San Diego State, but excludes any information about his events or marks.

There are only two true sports: Track and Cross Country.
All the rest are just games.
