thanks for all your hard work...i'd just like to say that Michelle Thompson, Mt. Carmel has a time of 11:59.74 from palomar league finals...her goal all season was to break 12, and she did

Gabriel Santana took over 900 shots at the finals around 500 of which are now uploaded to his Flickr collection.
Check his photo link on the results page or go here...
We are definitely bringing some competition to the State Finals. Stoudamire and Houston are definitely representing the women and all of the fellas are bringing strong competition so get ready State! We have to support our atheletes because it is not easy and for some who will be going for the first time, it can be a bit overwhelming! So parents and supporters come together and let's bring the medals HOME!

I don't think anyone is holding their breath. The reality of it a top ten finish is a great culmination to a season. If an athlete can make it to Saturday even better.

I THINK THEY DID WELL,BUT THAT 4X4, NOT TOO GOOD.BUT WHO IS TO SAY THEIR 4X1(WHO IS 5TH IN THE STATE)SHOULDN'T GO?????THEIR COACH IS OUT OF THEIR MIND!!!!!

Remember a while back when that one idiot was talking about what a great race it would be to see Hassay, Babcock and Chetelat in a 3200 and all of us joined in marching to his house and pulling him out and beating him? That was awesome, we sure showed him how much we know!

Hey GL, since those guys know where I live, do you think I need to buy a Rottweiler in case they return? Get ready for the Big Bang on Saturday bc the cosmic universe ballpark is only 24% of what it was less than 6 weeks ago.

Looked at this list and I happened to notice that Torrey Pines girls are sending runners to state in each of the 400,800,1600 and 3200. I wonder when the last time any school achieved this show of depth/strength, girls or boys?
Anyone else know if this has ever been achieved in SD before?
Posted on May 26, 2008, 4:57 PM from IP address 24.94.5.249
Yes, I meant depth in the distances and equally important, four different athletes in the four longest distances. One exceptional sprinter can qualify in the 100/200 and anchor the two relays, however no single athlete can power or enable a team to send each of a 400/800/1600/3200 competitor to state-

Wow. that IS impressive. You are really saying that they went 1,2,3 in the 3200 (+) 2/3 in the 1600? Division 1? The team MUST have won state in CC that year too then? How did it do? Thanks!

Yes, this prior Uni performance is indeed impressive and I think fairly comparable to what the TP girls accomplished this year. Adding in their additional 400 qualifier offsets the higher finishes and slightly faster times of the Uni girls in 1997, but ten years apart, these two teams sure packed a lot of punch/power! 3/4 TP girls are back next year too!

great times posted at finals very competitive and great performances by the athletes. for the first time in a while we have some favorites in the boys sprints at the state meet. Alston is number 2 going into the hundred while cooks is seeded at 8 and even more impressive they are 1 and 2 in the 200. Nico Reaves is number 1 in the 400 so we have a good showing from our boys in the state meet.. with the closer competition i think we can see alston break 10.5 and cooks back into the 10.5's Nico blazed past everyone in the first 200 and let up at the end of the race and still ran 47.3 with someone pushing him in those last 50 meters he should be able to get that 46 hes been after.. lets bring home some state titles.

the surface is new at cerritos - I think I heard its mondo. Regardless - not sure about the "cure" time for the surface. I know Mt.Carmel's surface has firmed up over past few years and producing good times. MC is also wind-aided most the time. Can't recall if cerritos is.
any input? peanut gallery?
But all those conditions being equal - I hope our top athletes put together great races again to represent the section well. Lot's can happen at state - takes concentration. Plus at this point - its always nice if the athletes and coaches come together a little bit to help each other represent the SD section as well as their schools and themselves.
Seems SD is getting better and better going into states. Those darn A/B things and shorter XC races must really be detrimental.

I take if from the sarcasm in your last sentence that you think all the girls representing SDS in the distances are from schools that race on Shorter XC courses. Not so! Four of the 9 are from smaller D2 schools that race in XC like the rest of the state does.

so did anyone think that there were any big surprises at finals? Did someone qualify for state who wasn't expected to or did someone not qualify who should have? Just curious to see what everyone thinks.
Posted on May 25, 2008, 8:52 AM from IP address 140.211.74.190
don't you think that is rude and disrespectful to a young man who put his heart on the track. People these days don't get that its not about being first its about bleeding for the love of the sport. And I believe that's exactly what he did. plus as of this time last week he was in the B heat.
Here is a quote straight out of the NCT
The most unexpected performance came from Rancho Bernardo's Aaron Fenlason, one of 18 boys and two relay teams from North County to qualify for Friday's CIF state meet. He advanced with a third-place finish in the 800, a race he wasn't supposed to be in.
Fenlason didn't qualify for the championship heat at the section prelims, but was promoted to the championship heat after a two runners dropped out.
"I was pretty depressed after the prelims," Fenlason said. "But my mood totally changed when I received a second chance. I knew that I had to make the most of the opportunity."
Posted on May 25, 2008, 10:00 AM from IP address 207.200.116.137
I can't say enough about A. Fenlason. He has the biggest heart i've ever seen and I don't think i've ever heard him say a single negative thing about anyone. Yeh he didn't get into the A heat first time around, but when he did get in he made the very best of it. If anyone deserves to be at state its him.
Congrats Aaron and represent everyone in SD. Good Luck!!!
Posted on May 25, 2008, 10:24 AM from IP address 66.27.95.252
In the prelims, the first 800 heat got a little crunched at 200 meters out which slowed things down a bit. I knew if Aaron got promoted to the "A" heat he would finish top 3. Remember, he ran 1:55+ at Escondido earlier in the season. Brett and Aaron running from lanes 8 and 9 and finish 2,3 in a photo finish...totally AWESOME!!! Great work guys! Good luck at "State"!

Ally Billmeyer not making it...in the last 100 it was very intense and from where i was sitting it looked like the La Jolla girl cut Ally off...it was probably unintentional but if that hadn't happened Ally probably would've beaten her...others around me agreed to the cut off...but Ally has three more years ahead of her...i was a surprised that Lauren Hall didn't do that good in the 800...but she did amazing in the 4x4 so i guess it all works out
Posted on May 25, 2008, 10:16 AM from IP address 76.88.103.77
Thanks for the support
At end of meet RB scratched Molly G from the 1600m so if CIF followed through with procedure Alli Billmeyer will be moved up and go to state. This good since most observers noted the cut off down the stretch.
I AM SURE the "cut off" was NOT intentional - these are young inexperienced girls not aware of the the two stride rule. This has gotten our athletes DQ at state level
Coaches need to teach this concept as well as train their athletes.

I felt for Allie in the 1600, and I don't know what happened to Lauren Hall in the 800. She looked like she had it right up until the last 100m...then I saw she got really sick after the race just as they were calling her up to the podium. Good for her in the 4x4-- She was hot! She should be running in the open 400m.
Posted on May 25, 2008, 11:42 AM from IP address 76.201.20.188
I was on the finish side and I didn't see a cut off by any runner. Nihal Kayali is just one tough runner and deserves what she got. She had a pr as did Sammy Silva, and they did awesome and had a bit more than Ali Billmeyer at the finish. Ali would have been top 3 in the 800 in my opinion had she run that.

david klarer beating the field in the 300h by a half-second was pretty impressive. i agree that finley from granite hills in the 110's was impressive as well, especially as a 10th grader.

I'm a little suprised that Grabill was able to pull off the double (1600 / 3200). The freshmen's probably had a target on her back since she won CIF XC. If she's running only the 3200 at state (with a stellar field including Hasay, Chetalet), maybe she along with Andrews and Morgan can be pulled along for really fast times. Thanks Katy Andrews for representing SD so well all these years.

Even the thought that I may have cut off Alli makes me feel horrible. I can assure everyone that whatever I may have done was completely unintentional. The thought that I could have prevented an extremely talented athlete's state berth is something I can't bear to have hanging over me. I'm thankful that she WILL have a chance to run at the state meet and I wish her and all other SD competitors the best of luck!

Great race from the Patrick Henry boy in the 3200 as well!

Congratulations to All! The surprises for me were Vanessa Houston getting 3rd in the 200 (but she qualified), Lauren Hall not making top 3 in the 800 (she's a Freshman & she's got time), Carlsbad not qualifying in the Women's 1600R, the GREAT Men's 400R (4 teams qualified), and the top 4 girls 3200 way under 11:00. And where was Tayler Williams? It was an exciting day!

I have to assume that the team ranking point totals are not merged - Cathedral Catholic total for the women is listed as 73.3 points and ranked first when I counted only 2 points. RB looks like they ran away with the womens title and Steele Canyon came back and won the overall mens.

When I put the team rankings up last night there was an overall ranking at the bottom of one of split results that I didn't notice.
I moved this to the Overall results and put-up the rankings by division in a separate file.

Theres no pressure and I am not getting ahead of myself. Every thrower should be improving 8 feet in the shot and 25 in the shot every year. Of course, there are no injuries involved along the way. Only the serious ones will do that.

Like the announcer said she did a hell of a transition from a distance runner to a hurdler jumper.
Pr in the Triple 35'7 (her 3rd time doing it)
Pr in the 300 H 45.37 School Record ( not to mention her 5th time doing it)
these are just some of the events she will do next year.
If you want to see her in action go to the Multi Event at Cuyamaca College and watch her compete in the heptathalon.

Great Job and way to cap off a perfectly UNDEFEATED season.

Real smart idea not only to have the boys infront of the girls but also to have the A heat go in front of the B heat. Shouldnt the fastest 4x1 of the day be the last race not the first?
Posted on May 24, 2008, 9:14 AM from IP address 72.220.231.49
if you looked at other posts, you would see the explanations posted by other coaches, athletes and many more...the reason the fastest go first is so in case of SCRATCHES a team from the B heat can move up and an alternative team takes the B spot...it is the fairest way to give all those the opportunity to run in the A heat and to qualify for state...jeeze

Just wondering who else got ticketed for "creative parking" =) I parked parallel to a building and was ticketed for being in a firelane. (There was no red paint or signs in sight wtf?) I saw a few cars parked up on the grass on the ends of the parking isles, along fire lanes, up on sidewalks...
I did however make one interesting obsevation, there was a truck parked up on the grass next to a firelane that went unticketed. Upon further investigation, I see there was a handwritten note scratched on a sheet of notebook paper that said "MT.CARMEL STAFF" with a signature. Apparently MT.Carmel "staff" is above the law...
Posted on May 23, 2008, 11:49 PM from IP address 72.199.196.68
I will take the time to answer this since I am aware of the SDPD policy in our parking lot.
If you park on the median grass and dirt areas (you need to jump the curb to do this) you will be ticketed.
If you block a fire access route (and they have signs on them) you will be ticketed.
If you are a regular person who parks in a designated handicapped spot (there were three of those last weekend), you will be ticketed.
Each year people come to Mt Carmel and feel they can park where they want, some use poor judgement, and get ticketed. If you feel you were wronged, you can always appeal your ticket in court.
Follow the basic rules above, and you will not have a problem.
Posted on May 24, 2008, 5:53 AM from IP address 71.136.49.26
No disrespect to Dennis McClanahans comment, but parking is always full at CIF expected, and every year I park blocks away. This year I did jump a curb like I see others do every year I didn’t think it was a violation since no signs posted about parking on islands I was not blocking the red curb. I took pictures and will appeal, will keep other informed with my outcome.

had a great day. from 51-10 to a 55-8 throw. Third best thrower on both divisions and because he was in the B heat, he gets to practice FB next week. I understand he should have done it last week and I accept it. He had the LUXURY to throw this week. He improved 14 feet from last year. And he is flying hig and will never forget this day.

Like I mentioned above, DUDE is only a Soph.!!! His series was awesome to watch and to see someone get fired up about their throws was fun to experience! I do have to say there were quite a few 57 qand 58 foot throws that were fouled in the A flight!
Posted on May 24, 2008, 11:08 PM from IP address 68.7.49.37
just stepped out of the front of the ring. Boy was that a big mistake. But those 57 foot fouls are still fouls. In the B heat on throw number 6, it seems the majority of the throwers were improving greatly. In next years football season, with M Bay and La Jolla playing against each other, you better watch the nose guard and center go against each other.

I do not know about in San Diego, but in other parts of the country, they stop if their is any sight of Lighting, or in some meets they monitor lightng strikes and if there is a lighting strike within 10 miles, the meet is stpped immediately. I'm told lighting can travel 10 miles is the reason.
Me personally, I have competed in the rain in both sprints and field events. It was interesting.

Simplot in Pocatello, Idaho; maybe something at U. of New Mexico; BYU has an indoor track.
The couldn't keep the Sunkist going in LA and used to be two in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. Too bad that we don't generate enough interest to sell a few seats.

the sunkist meet in san diego would draw sooo many people back in the day espcecially when it came down to the mile invitationaly. it would be nice to see it come back but with the lack of support and like the last person commented $$$$ would be nice as well.

The 1600 and 3200 can take 12 people without it causing an extra heat or taking up any more time. If the field events were to take 12 just because they can it would make the events last much longer so there is a difference in the two.
Posted on May 23, 2008, 3:00 PM from IP address 68.101.249.115
this is done mostly because it is the international convention to do so. it is done this way from High School meets to the NCAA to the World Championships and Olympics.
part of the reasoning is based on lane availability, but mostly it is based on the tactical nature of qualifying rounds in distance events where saving energy is one of the primary focuses. because each race is run slightly different based on the approach of the participants, the finish times can vary widely. this is assumed to not be the case in field events and sprints and hurdles, where maximal efforts are usually used to get to finals.

FLASH MUST READ "JUST IN FROM THE OFFICE OF SDCIF"

Because you asked for it everyone come dressed out in your school uniforms, we are going the doors to all athletes. Any athlete that come and runs, jump and throws will be going to CIF State Finals

The NCAA takes 12 to the 1500 finals outdoors and 12 to the mile final indoors. Same for USATF and the IAAF (world champs organizers) and IOC (Olympic games organizers). Why do 12 people advance in the distance races? Because the distance races are not run in lanes and they can advance as many as safely can be advanced. We don't have the protection of a magic white line in our races. We have to contend with dozens of other runners who can fall, spike us, elbow us, intentionally cut us off, box us in, and all the other little nasty things that happen in distance running. When's the last time someone spiked you or cut you off in the 100? They used to run 10k prelims and finals in some of the past Olympic games. Is that necessary when there's 25 laps to sort people out? No, which is why they've gone to a straight final the past several World Champs and Olympics. Perhaps they allow more in distance races because distance runners need to go through more to advance than a sprinter does, i.e. the greater taxing of different energy systems.
Posted on May 23, 2008, 3:02 PM from IP address 76.192.222.33
Can you imagine (and I think only those involved in distance running can really appreciate this) if they had 2 or 3 preliminary rounds of 800s, 1600s or 3200s in a 2-day meet for high schoolers?
Posted on May 24, 2008, 8:04 AM from IP address 68.6.193.98
Actually some of these freshmen girls have been running for years and are slowly improving as they mature and as they improve their fitness and their racing strategies. Don't be so quick to assume that the distance girls won't improve, won't work hard, will get cocky, and don't respect the sport enough to continue the hard work and the GOOD attitude. Don't underestimate these freshmen girls! They can make what they want of their future!!
Posted on May 23, 2008, 8:21 PM from IP address 76.201.20.188
Yes they can improve. But their adult bodies will be different. Heavier and wider and hopefully healthy. It's tough to convince the mind that the freshman speed can be maintained with the heavier and mature body.

I think someone needs to look at the fact a lot closer. I will put money down that out of the 1600 and 3200 for the girls 4 or more under- classmen will go to state. These times are from last weeks prelims
Yes they are amazing...and let's let them be amazing and not expect them to excel and drop their times every year..if we do we defeat them. How many times have we seen a Frosh break 5 and then struggle every year after that to get close to 5? It may be better to start at 5:30 and improve every year...at least as far as the mind is concerned. We want them to be healthy and part of that is accepting their changing bodies.

Seriously, everybody coming to the final tomorrow should be very careful about the stormy weather and the road conditions in the county. UT reported multi-car accidents on I-8 around Sunrise Highway and says: "the weekend? Looking pretty rough..."

Keep checking the Flickr collection by gabriel Santana as he's still uploading.
As of Friday morning at 7am there are over 1200 shots uploaded.
They're all full resolution, free for anyone to download or use the Flickr connected services which are very inexpensive and very good.
Because they're full resolution you can make high-quality poster prints if you wish.

any predictions on whose going 2 state? it seems hall and apgar 4 the 800, who else? i'm guessing ally billmeyer and molly grabil 4 the 16...mayb shanna st. laurent, or how mayb someone not as known erin menefee? she's proven 2 tough racer...in the 32 the favorites r grabil and megan morgan...who's going 2 b the 3rd runner? there's quite a few girls who r a top contendor 4 the spot

Could you please put in a request to have the grass/weeds mowed before finals? While we all know that the warmup area is not ideal, i think this would help even out the ground a bit.
Thanks.

how about getting some quality athletes going to state FINALS so I dont have to hear year after year how the san diego section track and field sucks just like wrestling. not sooo funny now huh... enough with the sarcasm. Mt. Carmel has the best facility in the section. Good luck to those who are competing this coming Saturday.

Our son Chase Roberts, had the opportunity to be coached by Dave Schultz his Freshman, Sophmore and Junior year. Coach was a mentor to Chase academically, and guided him to where he is today both in his education and his sport. Coach undertood Chase's passion for running, and encouraged him every day. His input and friendship was invaluable to my son. The boys on the Helix Cross Country Team are a family, and certainly Coach was a big part of it. We parents have heard many funny stories from road trips, and invitationals alike. Coach Schultz looked out for Chase, and always incouraged him. The loss our Cross Country family feels in unimaginable. The impact that Coach Dave Schultz has had on my sons life will be with him for not only the rest of his academic career, but for the rest of his life. Chase was blessed to have him in his life, and he will be greatly missed.
