The Hall is Calling

(TENNIS.com News) Outside of Australia and Argentina neither Pat Rafter nor Gabriela Sabatini would be considered tennis legends. But they are both Grand Slam champions and both will be inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Rafter is a former No. 1 and two-time U.S. Open Champion (1997–’98), he holds a career singles record of 358-191, and he won 11 titles. He is the 24th Australian to be inducted to the Hall of Fame.

Gabriela Sabatini is the first woman and only the second player from Argentina to be inducted, joining Guillermo Vilas. Sabatini was the 1990 U.S. Open champion and captured 27 singles titles in during her 13-year career. She was ranked in the Top 10 for ten straight years (1986–’95) and finished her career with a singles record of 632-189.

You're Welcome Rula

by Anonymous (no login)

And thanks for having this site dedicated to Gaby.

I'm retaking my fanship (jejeje) for Gaby and your site and forum were a great source of news and resources for me.

I have now a lot of videos and photos, but have a question. Do you have a lot of the youtube videos that were taken down (because of legal rights or whatever)? I want to complete may collection and I cannot find anywhere the videos of her in Diego's talk show or the ones for the Hall of Fame, and a lot others. Also I want to get or buy somehow the matches of the exhibition games, but I don't know where (in the US, because I have some friends there).

I'm from El Salvador and is very (VERY!!!) difficult to find anything here.
Can you help me?

Thanks and regards,
Claudia

You can find a lot of matches, especially in the first, since 1985.

Yeah, I have that exhibition and the one with Blondiekova wink.gif
This last one is good, mostly because it was in Argentina and even though she lost, the people there, her people, celebrated the event as if it was the final to some tournament and she was the winner. It was very sweet.
I would like to have at least the ones with Graf because of them being friends and all.

Maybe I'll be able to record this saturday's match. If I do, I'll post it for everybody here.

Thanks for the link.

Hi Alan

I was happy to read your nice comments about my former website and myself as well happy.gif, thank you sooo much !

Unfortunaley, Lycos has cancelled all the websites because they wanted to end everything so I decided not to continue with my website ! I'm sorry, I know many fans were used to visit it but I must admit that, in the past 2 years, I didn't have time to update it either !

I still have the whole stuff, pics, articles, interviews etc but it will not be online any more ! I know you're gonna be disappointed, I hope another fan will build another website with some old and new stuff !

Thanks again for your nice compliments, it's nice of you Alan. My former website washttp://www.1998germanier.com/

Have a nice week

by Alan (no login)

Hey Isa,

Thanks for your answers. You are welcome - You are cute and have a nice family - good for You all.
Noel gave me your site some time ago. It was very informative. I spoke with a military man in Argentina - Noel and I worked for the US Government for many years and traveled a lot - and the Argentine military man knows the G.S. business team and Gabriela saw your site several times and she really liked it - one of the best they said she said. She appreciated your respectful site. They said she said. SHe is involved in several charities in Argentina and this military man is as well. He has worked with her business team and security a few times. Noel and I have met her a few times on travel and she was very clean and decent.
Good Job - the pictures you had were great.
I hope You put a new site up and include those photos I know many people would like them.
Gabriela is always new to many people and she still has great appeal to new young players who look to G.S. for insights and substance.
Isa - You are a very unique person - keep up the good historic work.

I'm glad you love my website, I must admit that it took me a long time to build it, I had so much stuff... But, in the past 2 years, my personal life was so intense, I had many things to do and to take care of that I decided not to find a new place for my website and stop it. I know the fans will be angry with me and very upset but it's a big job to update and develop a website like this. Maybe one day, in the future, I'll build a new one but not now.

I'm very happy to know Gaby loved it as well, it's also for her that I built it so it's a great pleasure to learn she saw it many times and loved it. Gabriela is such a great person, so nice and polite, always smiling to her fans and signing autograph, I'm proud to have been a "fan" of her for more than 17 years, she has been a great example for me happy.gif !

Well, have to go now so don't hesitate to write me a message here OK, I'll answer as soon as I can !

Have a nice week
Greetings

Good Job Isa and Thanks again.

by Alan (no login)

Hey Isa - well done. I know some may be upset but You did do a Great Job and should be proud. Yes Gabriela and her staff did like the site and they were impressed - we are told by someone who would know. I hope your life is more calm now and all is well. I hope I am not prying but I do hope that Your life is good and your family is well. Yes Gabriela is a good decent example and a clean real person of dignity. But You ISA are also a good example and have touched many lives for the positive and have encouraged others with your efforts. Yes perhaps someday you will have a new site. At least you have the materials and info you will need. Hope the 'intense life' is good.
Do you live in Germany or other counrty in Europe? The photos you had of your life were also nice but I was not sure which country you live in - looks like Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, all are beautiful and pretty. I had the good fortune of traveling throughout the world and Western Europe was very nice and clean and pretty. Well, let me know how you are doing. Noel sends his greetings as well. Take care - GOD bless. Alan happy.gif

Hy to All of this forum, I'm Nicoletta, I'm italian, and this is my first time here. First of all, I'd like to thank so much Rula for her site but also Estel for videos updating!
Anyway, I'd like to ask you something:
Which was Gaby's racket during the exhibition "El dia y la Noche"? I knew hers last one was "yamaha ex 110", maybe... A Babolat model?
Anyone can upload her speech to the crowd BEFORE the 2008 italian Master Series ceremony? And about her exhibition with Steffi Graf in Berlin 2004?
Thank you so much for your attention,
Nicoletta.

A step forward :-)

by Nicoletta (no login)

Well, I've found something usefull to my research!
In the last part of her career she had "Yamaha Proto EX-110" http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=214069);
today she has "Babolat Pure Storm Team MP".
Mid-plus it's unbelieveable, but, if you want proof, go to
http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?p=3243552.
Another little request...
what about "Improve your game with Gabriela Sabatini"?! Anyone can post some videos?
Thank you all,
Nicoletta

Gaby Martina Buenos Aires

TRANSLATION

Gaby Martina Buenos Aires
Sabatini and Navratilova, each with their own style, shined in the Lawn Tennis
Woody Allen used the excuse of a movie to show two beauties so contrasting as Penelope and Scarlett. Somehow, the same thing could be said about Saturdays exhibition between Martina and Gaby. Nobody went to the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis just because of the love for Tennis. What everybody wanted was to see them
We came because of Gabriela, says Elena, a porteña teacher that got there with her younger daughter, Debora, a declared fan that acknowledges: I have been following her since I was a kid. I was a member of her fan club. Who else? Carina, 35 years old, traveled from Santa Fe to see her idol.
But notice that Martina has her popularity too. I came because probably this will be the only time in my life that I will be able to see the best tennist of all times in here, says Laura, student of sports reporting. And adds: Besides, the tickets were really cheap. I paid 18 pesos, much less than the movies!. And yes, it is more expensive to see Mr. Allens film.
In the other part, we have to agree that the two of them keep a very good physical form. Gabys legs are incredible. Her face, her hair really looks like a Barbie in a morocha (brunette) version. And Martina could be seen running behind every ball with enviable vitality (and we compare to her, when we arent able to even get the newspaper from the floor in the morning) And she is 52 years old we could kill her!
Another particular quality of Navratilovas is her competitivity. Lets say that being an exhibition, she shouldnt get angry for failing in hitting the ball or committing a double fault. When she relaxed a little, she was able to enjoy it more and so were the public. Later, during the doubles game, she answered to Pato Tarabini: "It's yours". And everybody laughed, very happy.
The event was a success. The Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club was full. A lot of money was collected for the FAIAM foundation, that fights the Miastenia Gravis.
There were a lot of women, but also many men. Cesar, a 50 year old lawyer, shares everybody dilemma: I dont know which one to keep, I love and admire them both. And then? Lets enjoy the both of them and do as Javier Bardem does

14-03-09 dia maravilloso de tenis

by (no login)

I'm sorry but my english it is not good enough to write this feelings.

December 2008 - End of year party
After a year of hard work, in which we received visits from some of Argentina's top tennis players, as well as several young men and women from abroad, Pilará Tenis Club celebrated with the academy's students. Everyone enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere in this special event attended by Gabriela Sabatini and the club's entire staff, which also featured magic shows and many other surprises

Tennis Hall of Fame To Honor Gabriela Sabatini

by (no login)

Tennis Hall of Fame To Honor Gabriela Sabatini

NEWPORT, RI The International Tennis Hall of Fame, in conjunction with the Copa Telmex Tournament in Buenos Aires, will honor 2006 Hall of Famer Gabriela Sabatini during the tournaments Official Players Dinner on Sunday, February 15, 2009. This special ceremony will be made by Mark Stenning, Chief Executive Officer of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and 2005 Hall of Famer Butch Buchholz.

The International Tennis Hal of Fame and the Copa Telmex Tournament will pay a special tribute to Sabatini, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. As one of Argentinas great tennis players, Gabriela Sabatini became the first woman from Argentina to capture a Grand Slam title, winning the 1990 US Open title and defeating world No. 1 Steffi Graf in a straight set final.

Sabatini was the WTA Tour's most impressive newcomer in 1985 and received Rookie of the Year honors. In a career spanning 13 years, Sabatini captured 27 singles championships and 14 doubles championships, including the Wimbledon Doubles title in 1988 (with partner Steffi Graf, Hall of Famer 2004). Sabatini was ranked in the World Top 10 for ten consecutive years (1986-1995), reaching the World No. 3 ranking in 1995. She held the No. 1 ranking in South America and Argentina from 1985 through 1996. An attacker with powerful groundstrokes and incredible topspin, Sabatini completed her career with a singles win-loss record of 632-189.

Sabatini was the leader of the Argentine Fed Cup team 1985-87 and 1995, with a win-loss record of 24-6 (13-4 in singles; 11-2 in doubles). She was also a member of the Argentine Olympic teams in 1988 and 1996, winning the singles silver medal in 1988. In 2006, Sabatini was the first woman from Argentina to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, following countryman Guillermo Vilas who was inducted in 1991.

The Copa Telmex, an ATP World Tour event, will take place on the outdoor clay courts of the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club February 16-22, with qualifying play on February 14 and 15. The Official Players Dinner on the 15th will kick-off a great week of professional tennis in Buenos Aires.

In addition to honoring Hall of Famer Gabriela Sabatini at the opening dinner, the International Tennis Hall of Fame will present an exhibit throughout the tournament featuring the great tennis players of Argentina, including Hall of Famers Gabriela Sabatini and Guillermo Vilas, as well as Enrique Morea, Jose Luis Clerc and many others.

Gaby in the Argentine Polo final match

by (no login)

I've found this video on Tennis Channel:

Look at the list of videos, in the "Player interviews" list, clik on Gabriela Sabatini. It will open a window with Gaby's video, an interview on Hall of Fame induction in 2006

Who is Mariano

by (Login estel74)

Who is Mariano? I read on several occasions this name. He's Gaby's boyfriend (I hope so) or simply a friend? I know Lujan is her best friend, in several interviews Gaby talk about her, so that often Lujan accompanies Gaby in her travels around the world (she was with Gaby in Roland Garros last month). But.... who is Mariano?

It was not an answer to my question, it was another question. But I must assume that the answer is: Yes, the guy seated near Gaby is Mariano.
Simple curiosity. Simple hope that this 38 years old "girl" finally has her own family (if she's married or not doesn't matter). It's what she wants, right?

In all case, it is not a problem, not for me but a lot of people don't want to think that Lujan is maybe Gaby's girlfriend....

I think Lujan is Gaby's best friend and I heard that she is in a relationship with another woman but must keep this quiet. Mariano is probably a good friend and helps her in life. I think Gaby is brilliant and lovely and deserves all of the happiness she can find.

Re: Who is Mariano

If Gaby likes women or men or both, for me it doesn't matter. If she has a relationship with a woman for me there is nothing strange. The important thing is that she's happy. But it is true that there are many people who refuse to think that Gaby can have a loving relationship with a woman, maybe because they have prejudices about this topic. It is also true that Gaby has always said not to be lesbian. But in the final analysis, why should she say publicly what are her feelings? These are only her business and she does very well, in my opinion, to keep it confidential. In any case, if Gaby is homosexual, bisexual or heterosexual is irrelevant, to me she remains a beautiful person and I wish her to be happy.

why is this so interesting for people? on this board it comes up a lot and on the wta board they can't stop talking about it, people make statements as if they know whats going on but the truth is no one does so why do people insist on going on and on about it, can people not just keep those opinions to themselves and talk about things that are interesting for a change and things that they actually know something about.

Re: truth

by Estel (no login)

You are right none of us knows nothing of the privacy of Gaby, so none of us can safely say what are her feelings, unless someone in this forum knows personally Gaby. But if that were the case for respect of intimacy of Gaby, who does not want to talk about her private life, would do well to keep quiet.
However, I'm very surprised to note that this issue raises emotions and reactions so strong. And I'm very surprised that the hypothesis Gaby may be homosexual irritates so many people. So I'm not at all surprised that there are gay and lesbians people who still prefer not to talk about their sexuality, especially if they are celebrities, just to see the reactions they cause.
Is not a disease homosexuality!

PS: and you are absolutely right is a real boredom having to write in English. I prefer to write in Italian, but I fear that nobody would understand!

Well said. My issue is that whenever Gaby's personal life is brought up and it is questioned whether or not she is heterosexual or gay, some people on this board get really irritated. Just remember to those who say, "Don't say this" and "You shouldn't write this", censorship is not a good thing either. And yes, I'd like to write in Spanish every once in a while.

Re: truth

You are right. Censorship is never a good thing! We should remember that there are many homosexual persons who censor themselves because they are afraid of people's intolerance .
I think that each of us can be covered by the speeches of others. Is something that commonly happens to everybody. The more a person behaves in a confidential manner, the more tries to keep hidden his/her privacy, is much more likely to be the subject of gossip! It's strange! But is human nature. What's more interesting of the lives of the others?
We should rather ask all of us because we are interested in the lives of other people (famous and not famous): because we like the gossip or because we are sincerely interested in others and motivated by a healthy curiosity?Obviously in the case of celebrities this phenomenon is much more obvious, if only because they are known by many more people who obviously know nothing about their private life. In the final analysis, what famous people would be the if did not exist fans who speak to them? Simply they would not be famous! But there are many famous people unable to manage the notoriety and all that it entails!

Dear Estele,

you´re absolutely right! People on this board react so aggressiv or emotional, when it comes to this "lesbian-topic". Why?

Bill´s and Isa´s reaction is still the same: we should let her privacy, they (!) are not interested in that question etc etc". Really? You are NOT INTERESTED, Bill and Isa? Sure you are!!! That´s the reason you are here. How often I´ve read of you to guys, that you´re looking for some news... What kind of news? "Good" news? News, which fit to your opinion of live?

And yes: she is lesbian! Absolutely! And this is not my opinion because I wish that she is lesbian.

And yes, let´s people talk about that! Thies is an open messageboard and not a board for some common opinions.

Case close!

La vérité

by Isa (no login)

Maybe, maybe not...

Isa, admiratrice depuis 17 ans !!!!

by (no login)

But the truth is that none of us ever will know nothing certain about the sentimental and sexual life of Gabriela unless she decides, one day, to talk about it clearly. But why should she do it? ancora...

by still (no login)

To all others, I say .... for once, you'll try to translate what I wrote. kisses

ciao Estel,

Maybe it's better that I write in English ...
I have not received your message as an accusation against me! I agree with you, on the whole line!
It's something unbearable bring the weight of a claim perfection. It seemed, and seems even today, that people wish that Gaby was perfect! Gaby is not perfect, she has never been and never will be, she never wanted to be perfect, even if there is someone who sees her as such and puts her on a pedestal. She's a human being, like all of us, with strengths and weaknesses, and for a human being, in the long run, is very uncomfortable being on a pedestal.
I agree with you. She has left the professional tennis because she could not bear all the more pressure, the attention, claims by the press, by the fans, perhaps even by the bulky parents and brother. I remember the comments that were often about her: why doesn't she smile more? why doesn't she talk more? why is she so shy? why is she so reserved? Why isn't she the number one? why doesn't she win more? Now people say: why hasn't she a boyfriend? why isn't she yet married? why hasn't she children? does she like men or women? why doesn't she play tennis more often, as her former colleagues? etc. etc. etc.
You are absolutely right! E CHE PALLE!!!!! How can I translate "E CHE PALLE"?
CHE PALLE...always be the perfect daughter, CHE PALLE...always be the perfect sister, CHE PALLE...always be beautiful and good, CHE PALLE...always be the successful tennis player rich and famous, CHE PALLE...always be the focus of other's speeches!

and I would add...

by Estel (no login)

.....that perfect people are horrible because they have not anything human!
And I would add that I loved Gaby (as tennis player, when she won and evem more when she lost) and still love her so much (as person) precisely because she's absolutely imperfect.

Aldebaran is the name of a star (the biggest and most shining star of Taurus costellation). Maybe do you mean another Aldebaran?
