Several ancient historians clearly differentiated between Macedonians and Hellenes. For example, they would write of "Macedonians and Hellenes", but none of them wrote about "Athenians and Hellenes", or "Spartans and Hellenes", etc.
It is also known that Macedonians were not allowed to take part in the Olympic games because they were not considered Hellenes.
