Z tym ze T-54 modernizowane na T-55 (T-55U) nigdy nie posiadaly oslony antyradiacyjnej i antynapalmowej (jak w T-55A). Istaniala jeszcze wersja oznaczana czasami jako T-55M, czyli czolgi T-55 pierwszych serii bez p-lot km-u na wiezy (widziana chocby na paradzie 1000 lecia w 1966 roku) wyposazane potem (w latach 70.) w tenze km.
Pojazdy eksportowane do NRD, na Wegry i do Jugoslawii byly fabrycznie nowe (T-55A). Na Bliski Wschod (np. Irak, Syria, Iran, Libia), do Indii, oraz innych panstw Afryki (np. Jemen) trafialy pojazdy zarowno uzywane (w tym nie przerabiane T-54 i przerabiane T-55U/M) oraz fabrycznie nowe.
