Hi

I need a bit of help. I'm hoping to visit Krakow this summer, and I need to know:

(a) Where is the best area in the city to stay: old town, city centre, kazimierz, etc.. Where would be the best place to get a hotel for visiting around the city?

(b) Where are the best model shops in town?

(c) Which are the best museums and sites to visit for military history? I am particularly interested in the 1939 battles and the Polish army of the period.

(d) What are the best things that I can send my wife to, while I'm visiting military sites?

I am very grateful for any help you can give me,

Chris Lloyd-Staples

Few answers

1. Place for stay- everything depens on amount of money you want to pay for it. Hotels which are located close to Rynek Glowny are quite expensive and you have to book them many weeks earlier. But on the other hand... you are in the centre of this beautiful city. Close not only to museums, but clubs and restaurants, too This link should help you to take right decision:
http://www.odkryjpolske.com/
2. I know only one GOOD model store in Cracow- it's PHANTOM located close to Rynek Glowny (Slawkowska 13 street). They have very helpful staff and they can speak English.
3. Unfortunately I know only two military related museums in Cracow:
Aviation http://www.muz-lotnictwa.krakow.pl/
Armed Forces http://www.krakow.pl//kultura/instytucje/?INS_TYP=2&INS_ID=180
If you want to learn more about Polish Army- you should visit Warsaw.
4. Excellent place for your wife will be Royal Casttle http://www.krakow.pl/en/turystyka/?id=wawel.html

Hope it helps.

Michal

About hotels, as Michal said it's depend's of money...
We've got here Sherton, SAS, two Novotel, but also fine and cheaper System-Hotels (of Ibis as far as I remember) both are on the board of the town, but comunication is quite good.
If you wan't to see the town I would recoment you moving by bus ( city center is well known of hudge trafic jam's and non - parking areas ).
About shops
mentioned above PHANTOM at Slawkowska, near Market Squre
also at Stradomska ther is a train modelers shop, but they have some of the 'normal' stuff
"Pancerka" at Anieli Krzywon, better to contakt someone from here who'll guide you there.

Cheers
Jakub

In case you need some reasonable accomodation and so forth plus some bearings as far as the booze is concerned yo can count o the undersigned.

The agenda include a visit to the undersigned's wherebouts, examining his model collection as well as discussing his "modest" library o references, documents and photographs.
