That was an American variation of an old English sea shanty that listed the way home to Port before a method to deduce Longitude was accurately devised.
If I remember it went something like;
"The first land we made was called the Dodman, then Ramehead off Plymouth, off Portsmouth the Wight.
We sailed high Beachy, Fairlee & Dover, then made our course true for the South Foreland Light"
Never allowed to be sung on Royal Navy ships though, tantamount to mutiny for Salts & Tars to know where they were at sea. |
