They live in the High Mojave Desert between elevations of 1300 to 5900 feet.

They are protected by California Law, along with the Desert Tortoise, the Raven, and the Bald Eagle. It is unlawful to remove one to build a private residence. You must build around it or adjacent to it.

If an important building, such as a Hospital, must be built on the land it occupies, then the Joshua Tree must be transplanted in the exact same orientation to the Sun.

Ours is about 500 years old.
