Response to Another fun day at the boat launch.
Back in the early 70's, we went over to the sub base at Pearl Harbor and noticed a very pronounced oil slick on the water. Seems the old fast attack sub Sea Dragon was in the dock concluding a six month overhaul when they decided to give some of the junior officers experience bringing the boat alongside the pier. (An operation known as "bumper drills".) The officer in charge gave an astern engine order and the boat backed out of the narrow berth. Not far across the way an oil tanker was tied up, it's side facing the Sea Dragon's stern. Yep, just a wee bit too much reverse. She ran right into the tanker, her twin screws (each bearing a long, sharp taper) punched two holes in the the storage bunkers just below the waterline. The Sea Dragon limped back in for about six more week's worth of repairs.
