Except a dog CAN'T smile, because it has no facial muscles!
That wide "grin" with the tongue hanging out is your dog's way of perspiring, because dogs have no pores on their skin for perspiration like humans do. If they did, their coats would constantly be damp and soggy, and you wouldn't even want to pet them!
A dog has other ways of showing happiness, such as tail-wagging and other body languages.
However, dogs DO have muscles on top of their muzzles behind their noses, which they wrinkle along with growling when threatening a human or another dog.
But you'll say: "You can't tell me that my Rusty ain't smiling...just look at that wide grin!"
