and despite the comic perception of a rigid and uptight prussian officer, some extremely sensitive thinkers. took many centuries to develop a warrior class like them, and of course then they get mixed into the nazi era and you have to sort out who was a party hack and who was the normal wehrmacht professional.
i'm sure you would throw erwin rommel on your list. they lost a lot in ww2, some real people, their finest officers, and millions of fighting men. the SS troops were uniformly a bad lot and tainted the lot of them. one of those things they've had to live with and get over.
