Tablet alternatives to the Kindle Fire

My wife got me a Kindle Fire for me for Fathers Day. I am enjoying my Fire. I use it as a reader and to surf the Internet. I do not use it for my e-mail is on an exchange server and it seems like I will need a $20 app to read exchange e-mail.

One of my daughters is wanting to buy a Kindle Fire and I am thinking that it might be a chance for me to upgrade to a more capable tablet. I like the 7" format and would like to stick with that. I don't think I would like to spend over $300.

What do you recommend?
