I avoid refined sugars in the same manner a diabetic would. I exist on Unsweetned Almond milk which has 35 calories per cup.
I freeze one cup and add one unfrozen cup to a blender with Sucolose sweetner and metamusil and a 1/4 cup of frozen blueberries and make a smoothie. I try to make it thru the day on the smoothies until my evening meal when I have either Pork Tenderloin, boneless skinless chicken thighs, beef tenderloin,wild salmon, shrimp or squid all of which is grilled and usually seasoned with my own homemade BB sause without sugar.
If I do eat lunch, it is bacon and eggs which we again raise here, I get some sugar with the cure on the bacon.
Most days, I am putting in 20 carbs, and 700 to 800 calories.
I have been following a high protein, low carb, low sugar diet for quite a while and just simply feel better on it.
I would love to add almonds and peanuts to that,I do like peanut butter an excelent source of protien, but it upsets my digestive track so much and will come up in the form of acid reflux when I go to bed.
As far as starches, I eat no breads, no grains, no pasta, potatoes or refined sugar. My smoothies satisfy my sugar cravings/deserts without any sugar except what is in the blue berries.
I buy no prepared meals ever. If I want vegetables, I eat Broccoli or califlower, for fruit I only eat blue berries that I grow here on the vineyard, and I have pretty much an unlimited supply of blue berries, we have had 7 large blueberry bushes and have 3 that have come ripe so far that have yeilded 22 quarts, we bag them and freze them for a winters supply.
I used to put mangos in my smoothies, and dearly love them, but it is just too much sugar for me.
When I lived on my mountain, I lived on elk and deer which I shot and cut and wrapped myself.
I go to the Dr. once a year for a full checkup and to renew prescriptions, one of which is Lipitor, I have taken it since it came out. I am prone to producing too much cholesterol outside of diet, something I found out 20 years ago. My father was having heart attacks in his 40's, while my mothers side of the family have no need for religion due to being damn near immortal. My body build and coloring is that of my mothers side of the family.
Altho I do take Lipitor, I have the yearly liver tests, have no adverse reaction to the drug, and have never had a heart attack or stroke, I subscribe to the thinking that if Lipitor stops the 2nd heart attack or stroke, it will also prevent the first.
I weekly exercise to exhaustion or collaspe, and have no signs what so ever of heart trouble.
I take no vitamins and seldom do unless my yearly bloodwork indicates a shortage, this year I had a shortage of vitiman B. I have always thought that vitamins are not absorbed unless eaten in food and the pills simply pass thru unabsorbed, and recent studies have show that I was absolutley right on that. In fact the vitamin supplements that americans spend millions on are in fact harmful in many cases,ie., Calcium supplements have recently been proven to cause cancer in women.
I read every health study I can find on the internet so that I am informed of recent studies and how those facts can impact my health.
Altho I have never smoked, but I must confess to weaknesses, I do love a drink of 2 oz's Stolichaya vodka in the evening, a trait that has now been shown to promote a longer life, and damn good coffee another substance that has been proven recently to prolong life. The other is frequent sex, it makes you healtier, live longer protects the prostate and heart and is the glue that keeps a good relationship fresh and satisfying.
And how do I know this, again from reading recent medical studies.
And so far,it is all working great for me, I mean Jesse, how many 63 year old men do you know who can do pushups in the hundreds and keep up a 4 MPH pace uphill for an hour?
