With those who lost friends and loved ones recently, I hate to even post this, but to us it is a big deal.
We've lost our family Chesapeake Bay Retriever early this morning, Simon of Cyrene. He was a sweet pooch, very loving. I think he was an Italian dog (or just took on our traits) as he would only eat if he had someone to eat with him (social eater). Otherwise, he'd wait for us to come home and then he'd eat.
My wife is totally devasted, as I knew she would be. We had him for 13 years (before we had kids), so he was our "Child" before childer. We even had birthday parties for him, etc. I haven't even told the kids yet, as they are still asleep.
Here are some of his pictures of his puppies nursing on my fingertips, and him. more can be found herehttp://www.hamcontact.com/simon/
The favorite is him jumping into the Susquehanna river when we took him east one year, and the other of him just looking good.
A good dog is impossible to replace. It always amazes me how they accept us and take on many of our human traits. They truly become productive members of the household. My condolences to your family.
He will live forever in thier dreams... you remember all your dogs... tell your kids about your fond memories of life and death of friendships and wet paws. A great time to talk to the kids at a kid level... he was a 'nuther kid to them too.
Our eldest, a Yellow Labrador Retriever, AKC registered as Sunflower Buttercup Daisy, also turned 13 last month. (We also have three cats)
When I hear of a cherished dog passing, it reminds me of two songs:
Elvis Presley's "Old Shep" and Neil Diamond's "Shilo".
My sympathies to you and your family.
When Daisy passes, we're going to take the advice of many professionals in the dog world, and REPLACE HER IMMEDIATELY.
HAROLD (BTW...our middle dog NOVA killed another cottontail this morning that burrowed under the fence into our yard..he usually wastes a squirrel, a rabbit, or a sparrow at least once a week.)

We lost our dear beautiful Pom, Shadow, last year almost a year ago. She was our first dog, and my wife's father gave her to us. She was our sweet dear friend, and we miss her so. It still is hard to realize that she is gone. We have three other dogs but it was still a heartbreak. Nothing will ever replace her and there is no way that another will touch our hearts like she did.
I can sympathize with you and understand your hurting heart and ache in your stomach. It took me many days to quit crying, and I'm a grown, forty something man. We grieved for a while, then my wife finally said she was ready to get another puppy and we have poured our love out on the new dog, whom we named Shadow's Grace. We call her Gracie. Gracie has helped us to smile again, to love again and to pet and play with a new found rambunctious puppy. My wife has even taken to training her and this has helped them to bond.
i know it is painful to lose a dear friend like that.i lost my dog on june 16.he had surgery and the next day he was gone,it broke my heart.
i got a new puppy last week,3\4 boxer 1\4 redbone coonhound. big feet and ears.just not the same. hope all goes well with your kids.
It's never easy to lose a friend. After 4 years, I still miss my Harley Davidson kitty. I hope all the good memories will bring you and your family some comfort during this difficult time.
