Remington 700 .308 and scope question.

Hey guys, wound up buying a Rem 700 about 5 months ago after a long time of wanting one. Got it in .308 cause its my favorite round, but I have a quick couple of questions. They make a box magazine conversion for it, which I'm very interested in, but I don't know much about them. Any of you guys have any experience with them? How easy are they to install, and would I be able to do it myself? I know the rifles comes in short and long actions, so I'm assuming the conversions will depend on that. Also, if anyone has one willing to part with maybe we could work something out.

I also have a scope question. The rifle came with a Rem marked 3-9x32 (can't remember the objective size), and I swapped it out for a Bushnell 6-24x44 or 50 mm scope I had on one of my PCPs. I haven't sighted in the rifle with this scope on it yet because I'm not sure if it will hold up to the .308 recoil. Its not the most expensive scope in the world, but I really like it, and I don't want to bust it. Any advice?

Thanks in advance guys! Hope you all enjoyed eating some delicious BBQ today.

Not hard at all.

It's just the bottom metal that bolts through the stock and into the receiver. It's two bolts. Most of the receiver kits also contain two bedding pillars. These are an accuracy enhancer and require additional modification to the stock. You basically over-drill the stock bolt holes bigger and epoxy the pillars in place. They prevent crushing of the stock and allow a consistent torque value to be applied to the stock screws every time they are reassembled.

Brownells is an excellent place to shop for the magazine kits as well as the epoxy bedding to glue in the pillars. Youtube, MidwayUSA, and Brownells should all have videos on pillar bedding a bolt rifle.

Most rifle scopes are engineered for rifle recoil. I doubt you will have any problems with a scope. Use blue Loctite on the rings.

Kind regards,

Thanks Kevin !

I appreciate the advice man. I know rifle scopes are engineered for rifle recoil, but I'm not sure if the Bushnell is rated for it. I guess I can call them tomorrow with a model number and see what's up. Worse case scenario, I'll stick the scope it came with back on there for now.

Any advice on replacement stocks? I would like something with a ton of adjustability. It seems like they are all so expensive though...

How much money do you have?

Stocks are such a personal choice, me giving advice would be opinion only. My Rem 700 .308 has the factory HS Precision (pillar bedded) stock it came with. I have three 700s in centerfire and another as a muzzleloader. Each has a different type of stock, none are adjustable. I don't change much so I don't really feel the rifle needs to be adjustable. Like I said, it's all opinion. Is there something about your factory stock that you don't like?

I think the cheapest stock out there with adjust-ability is the Choate Target/Tacticals $150-$200. The Accuracy International Chassis System (AICS) are towards the top cost wise $900-$1100.

Here's one I'd like to build another long range rifle on:http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=43777/avs%7CMake~~Model_1=Remington__700/Product/REMINGTON-700-TAC21-CHASSIS# Right after I hit the lotto... LOL

Good luck,

Haywire

Very cool..

I saw the AICS stocks and as cool and useful as they are, they are way expensive. With me, it just comes down to adjustability. The factory stock isn't too bad at all, but I would really like an adjustable cheek rest and to be able to adjust for lop. Maybe I'll get some kind of stock with an m4 style butt on it cause I'm having inclinations of making it into a type of scout rifle. I would either put some type of quick acquisition dot/reflex sight on it, or find a stock that will enable me to put a forward mounted scope on it. I recently won a 300 win mag rifle, so I can keep that for messing around at distance.

I really appreciate your help here Kevin, thanks a ton. Best of luck to you.

Second the HSP Stock

I have a 700 LTR in. 308. Stock is comfortable, good firm no slip grip and the rifle groups 1 hole when I shoot from the bench. No adjustments available. I'm just an average size guy and got lucky. It fits. I'll never let it go.

Scope is a Springfield Armory 3rd Gen w/ballistic reticle. Never had a problem.
