The Great Escape

by

I read your message regarding your requeat for your roots and see that you mentioned the Great Escape during World War 2.

My brother Neville McGarr was the man who was involved.
He was a fighter pilot in the South African Air Force holding the rank of Lieutenant. He flew a Tomahawk fighter and was shot down in the North African desertand eventually taken prisoner by the Germans. He was imprisoned in the camp known as Stalugluft 3 near a town called Sagan in Poland.
The Great Escape took place on 25 March 1944 and over 75 men climbed through the tunnel. Unfortunately most of them were recaptured and on Hitlers orders 50 were shot. (murdered in cold blood)My brother was one of them.

Together with my 2 sisters I visited the scene of the escape on the anniversary of the event in 1994.

If you are interested in more information please let me know.

The McGarr family in South Africa is quite small and if you are interested I can give you more information

Best regards

Doug
