I'm doing research on my mother's family. We are told (on uncertain authority) that a William McGarr came to PLennsylvania fro Ireland about 1800 and thereafter changed the name to Short (presumably a translation from McGarr, though that doesn't make much sense to me). That family I have heard was converted to Methodism by John Wesley, from either Roman Catholicism or Presbyterianism. I don't even know whether the McGarrs were Irish or Scotch-Irish, though their lives in the United States suggest Scotch-Irish. I'd appreciate any information that you have.
