Larry Kudlow blames Congress and low income families for housing crisis: ‘Guilty Liberal Consciences’ Forced Banks To Make Bad Loans

Larry Kudlow proves once again that he’s nothing more than a right wing, free market, Milton Friedman hack that just lies at will. Doesn’t he have a conscience? Nope…It’s never the big money freepers that horde the wealth of this country and have no restrictions on what they can do thanks in part to Mr Deregulation himself, John McCain. Jon Perr has more...

Memo to Repuglicans: CRA Has Nothing To Do With the Current Problems

by Anonymous

There's a meme going around the right wing blogs. Deregulation has nothing to do with the current problems in the market. The real culprit is the Community Reinvestment Act signed into law by President Carter in 1977. Nothing could be further from the truth as a reading of the facts of the matter reveal.

Let's look at a root cause of this garbage. John Hawkins at Right Wing News has a classic analysis :

Conservatism Is An Utter Failure

by John McBush Approves Phil Gramm

The American economy is being wrecked by conservatism. Something like one trillion dollars has evaporated almost overnight, George Bush is apparently hiding in the White House, banks and brokerage houses fall, investment bankers think of leaping off tall buildings cushioned by a golden parachute, and taxpayers are on the hook for these serial conservative failures to the tune of hundreds of billions and counting. There's plenty of blame to go around the entire GOP. But if we have to choose just one, the ringleader in the economic failure of conservatism -- the man who called this horrific economy a mental problem and those of us worried about it a 'nation of whiners' -- is a lesser known figure by the name of William "Phil" Gramm:

Gramm spearheaded efforts to pass banking reform laws, including the landmark Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999, which served to reduce government regulations in existence since the Great Depression separating banking, insurance and brokerage activities. ... critics of Gramm point out that this same legislation may have been pivotal in encouraging the corporate practices that led to the 2008 mortgage crises in America.

"Countdown with Keith Olbermann" reported Tuesday night that lobbying disclosure forms, filed by the giant Swiss bank UBS, list McCain’s campaign co-chair, former Texas Sen. Phil Gramm, as a lobbyist dealing specifically with legislation regarding the mortgage crisis as recently as Dec. 31, 2007. -- Image and text courtesy of MSNBC 27 May 2007

In a just world, Mr. Gramm would spend the rest of his life in abject poverty, marching from town to town begging forgiveness of the millions of Americans whose lives he helped ruin. In John McCain's bizarro world, Phil Gramm remains a trusted economic advisor and close personal friend. John McCain is entitled to choose his friends as he see fit. But politically, given Gramm's indisputable role in the unfolding economic meltdown, if McCain is serious about regaining any credibility at all, he must jettison the failed conservative ideology that landed us in this mess. McCain could at least start by immediately and publicly disavowing the corrupt influence of Phil Gramm.

John Sidney McCain III forgets where Spain is

by Time to recheck his Medical Records?

QUESTION: Senator, finally, let's talk about Spain. If you're elected president, would you be willing to invite President Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero to the White House to meet with you?

MCCAIN: I would be willing meet, uh, with those leaders who our friends [sic] and want to work with us in a cooperative fashion, and by the way, President Calderon of Mexico is fighting a very very tough fight against the drug cartels. I'm glad we are now working in cooperation with the Mexican government on the Merida plan. I intend to move forward with relations, and invite as many of them as I can, those leaders, to the White House.

QUESTION: Would that invitation be extended to the Zapatero government, to the president itself?

MCCAIN: I don't, you know, honestly I have to look at relations and the situations and the priorities, but I can assure you I will establish closer relations with our friends and I will stand up to those who want to do harm to the United States of America.

QUESTION: So you have to wait and see if he's willing to meet with you, or you'll be able to do it in the White House?

MCCAIN: Well again I don't, all I can tell you is that I have a clear record of working with leaders in the hemisphere that are friends with us, and standing up to those who are not, and that's judged on the basis of the importance of our relationship with Latin America, and the entire region.

QUESTION: Okay... what about you, I'm talking about the President of Spain?

MCCAIN: What about me what?

QUESTION: Okay... are you willing to meet with him if you are elected president?

MCCAIN: I am willing to meet with any leader who is dedicated to the same principles and philosophy that we are for human rights, democracy and freedom, and I will stand up to those that do not.

LISTEN TO THIS: It's only 2 minutes long.

The free market phonies and Wall Street types always used to tell us endlessly about how bad and evil the government was. Until they needed everyone else to bail them out. "Just leave us alone and let business be business" is what we would had to listen to over and over. Right. So where are they now? Cowards and hypocrites. Each and every one of them.

Government announces $85 billion loan to save AIG

Government announces $85 billion loan to rescue AIG to stave off further financial turmoil

In a bid to save financial markets and economy from further turmoil, the U.S. government agreed Tuesday to provide an $85 billion emergency loan to rescue the huge insurer AIG. The Federal Reserve said in a statement it determined that a disorderly failure of AIG could hurt the already delicate financial markets and the economy.

It also could "lead to substantially higher borrowing costs, reduced household wealth and materially weaker economic performance," the Fed said.

"The President supports the agreement announced this evening by the Federal Reserve," said White House spokesman Tony Fratto. "These steps are taken in the interest of promoting stability in financial markets and limiting damage to the broader economy."

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said the administration was working closely with the Fed, the Securities and Exchange Commission and other government regulators to "enhance the stability and orderliness of our financial markets and minimize the disruption to our economy."

"I support the steps taken by the Federal Reserve tonight to assist AIG in continuing to meet its obligations, mitigate broader disruptions and at the same time protect taxpayers," Paulson said in a statement.

It is Bush – with the strong support of John McCain – who tried to privatize Social Security. It is Bush – with the big-time backing of John McCain – who turned our energy policy over to Dick Cheney and the oil company lobbyists. And it is Bush – with enthusiastic encouragement of John McCain – who has packed the federal courts with right-wing zealots who look like the third guy from the left on the evolutionary chart.

Mccain: "Many Americans aren't paying taxes"

by Anonymous

I heard this, this morning and thought maybe I wasn't awake and misheard him. Well Jedreport always helps me feel like i'm not insain. John Mccain actually said in reponse to a question about if he agreed that Obama was cutting about 90% of American's taxes and Mccain's reply / excuse was that "many Americans aren't paying taxes". And after being pressed on the issue he says "well Obama has voted for tax increases before, so that means we can't trust his word. However hasn't Mccain voted to tax increases before? If you even try to follow that logic it will lead you down like five different paths. So Obama is really covering more people? Or less, or we need to tax people more because so many aren't paying taxes? Or because other people aren't paying taxes neither should anyone else?

McBush Now Claims He's For Regulation After Years Of Pushing For Deregulation

by First Time a Tragedy. Second Time a Farce.

McCain Embraces Regulation After Many Years of Opposition

A decade ago, Sen. John McCain embraced legislation to broadly deregulate the banking and insurance industries, helping to sweep aside a thicket of rules established over decades in favor of a less restricted financial marketplace that proponents said would result in greater economic growth.

Now, as the Bush administration scrambles to prevent the collapse of the American International Group (AIG), the nation's largest insurance company, and stabilize a tumultuous Wall Street, the Republican presidential nominee is scrambling to recast himself as a champion of regulation to end "reckless conduct, corruption and unbridled greed" on Wall Street.

We are now the United Socialist States of America - for the elite few

by Privatizing Profit . . . Socializing Loss

We know own an insurance company that gambled wildly at the casino and lost. They left their mark all over the world and we will be discovering new hidden surprises for some time to come. Can the Republicans who paved the way for this hyper-capitalism (I'm looking at you, Phil Gramm) admit they were horribly wrong? Again, where the hell are those Republicans who voted for this mess? Can the Democrats find the spine capitalize on this monumental failure - not in six months, but now - and begin changing the way business operates in the US? When the times are good (though in fact, they really weren't) we brag to the world about how wealthy our CEOs are and the hundreds of millions they receive. The second their gambles falter, the taxpayer is expected to jump in and save the day. McCain-Keating Five bailout looks like chump change and it was compared to these nationalizations or whatever they want to call them.

At this point the AIG bailout/nationalization to the tune of $85 billion is a done deal. The American taxpayer is now responsible for the bad business practices of AIG and it's questionable whether we will ever see our money back. The bailout is expecting business to return to normal in the near future and that is pure fantasy. The US (and European) economy will not be anywhere near normal until 2010, if then. This will put much more pressure on the federal government who will either have to drastically cut back or raise taxes or both. As a country, we do not have this money to spend so investing in the US will become much less attractive, driving up inflation just as it was beginning to stabilize. Again, we are propping up the biggest companies and the richest Americans at the expense of everyone else. The average American has watched their standard of living decline since the 1970s while those at the top have profited much like we see in a Third World country. It's embarrassing and against our previous American values. Sure we all should have an opportunity to move ahead and succeed financially, but that means we all should have an opportunity to move ahead and succeed financially, as in "all" and not just a few.

Where is my Bailout?

by Not too big to fail

This month I am closing my small recruiting business because the unemployment rates and outsourcing coupled with rising costs make it impossible to operate. I have never invested in predatory loans, nor subsidized the sharks that fed off of people’s desire to own a house. I have not paid myself a salary that would disgust Gordon Gekko. All I have done for the last 8 years is help folks find jobs with decent wages and benefits. I don’t think selling my office furniture is going to allow me much of a "golden parachute.’

In the last eight years we have gotten over 600 people jobs. That is about 600 more jobs than the Bush administration has created. In fact, this year alone I am about 438,000 jobs ahead of Bush. Of course now I have to subtract the 3 people I am laying off.

So, President Bush and Secretary Paulson, I have a proposal. I figure for a measly $70,000 I could stay in business. I could re-hire my staff and go back to helping folks get work. Of course, that will not allow me enough money to write big checks to the Republican Party (not that I would), so I guess I shouldn’t bother to check the mail for MY bailout check. Therefore I will be packing up my office supplies and donating them to the local Obama headquarters. Even during these difficult times, the irony of that makes me smile. And to John McCain: I can assure you the fundamentals of my economy are not strong.

Timing is Everything when Nationalizing an Industry

by Anonymous

Yes, that's right, you've got a troubled insurance giant with billions of dollars tied up in worthless pieces of paper masquerading as securities. Yours for the low low price of $85 billion dollars!

You know, if this was Bolivia, the State Department would put out a strong statement declaiming the nationalization of industry and the stifling of private enterprise. But of course, in this case, industry made horrible decisions, so that justifies the Communism. It's unclear to me that it's even legal for the government to structure this absent legislation, but we're in a brave new world...

By the way, this could have been handled for $45 billion less three days ago. The shorts battered AIG's stock so mercilessly that they put taxpayers on the hook for twice as much.

Long Live the New Union of Socialist Republicans

by Anonymous

Welcome news comrades! We the People are now We the Owners. The People's Insurance Company, formerly known as AIG, was saved for the time being from the forces of capitalism by the new Union of Republican Socialists, formerly known as the GOP. Somewhere in the great beyond, the ghost of Karl Marx is grinning while the spirit of Adam Smith forks over the one dollar bet with an invisible hand:

In a move aimed at averting a new global economic shock, the US Federal Reserve agreed an unprecedented 85-billion-dollar rescue loan for American International Group. The deal, sealed late Tuesday, saved AIG from collapse and gave the US government a 79.9 percent stake in the insurance behemoth.

Now that the People own a major insurance company, it's fair to ask how the People's Insurance Company, along with the People's Mortgage Companies and the People's Investment Banks, will benefit the People who Own them. Can we expect lower premiums, equity sharing, and corporate perks for our hundreds of billions of dollars? Should we start checking our mailbox for dividend checks? Who gets paid first, claimants, bondholders, stockholders, or we the new taxpayer owners? We the Owners, want to know, and the Union of Socialist Republicans better damn well tell us, fast.

John Sidney McCain III doesn’t know what his own committee does.

by Worse than Bush

With Wall Street’s financial institutions in turmoil, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) argued in a series of interviews today that his experience on the Senate Commerce Committee meant he knew “how to fix this economy.” “I understand the economy. I was chairman of the Commerce Committee that oversights every part of our economy,” McCain told CNBC’s Squawk Box. Watch it:

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/09/16/mccain-commerce-committee/

But, as the Washington Post points out, the Commerce Committee doesn’t oversee “every part of our economy,” let alone “the very areas now in crisis“:

In fact, it is the Senate Banking Committee that has oversight of “banks, banking and financial institutions; control of prices of commodities, rents and services; federal monetary policy, including the Federal Reserve System; financial aid to commerce and industry and money and credit, including currency and coinage.”

According to its Web site, the Commerce Committee oversees 13 areas, beginning with the Coast Guard, and continuing through “regulation of consumer products and services … except for credit, financial services, and housing” — the very areas now in crisis.

It’s not that surprising that McCain is confused about the Commerce Committee’s economic responsibilities, considering that he freely admits, “The issue of economics is not something I’ve understood as well as I should.”

MTA killer engineer was "mentoring" the kids he was texting

Yeah, if he was as big a faggot as the assholes I came in contact with when I worked in the industry - he was mentoring those kids like a Catholic priest mentors an altar boy.

e Metrolink engineer who was at the controls of the passenger train that ran a red light and hit a Union Pacific freighter, killing 25 commuters, was a lifelong train enthusiast and a loner with a misdemeanor criminal record, it was reported Tuesday.

So far in the investigation, no problems have been found in any mechanical or electronic systems.

But authorities are looking into reports that Sanchez may have been text-messaging some teen train enthusiasts moments before the crash.

The Facts on the Ground

by Once, it's a Tragedy. Twice, it's a Farce.

* This economy is a direct result of the implementation of republican policies that McCain favored, and continues to favor;

* Even Greenspan said it was the worst economy he has ever seen, and that we can’t afford McCain’s tax cuts;

* McCain’s tax cuts overwhelmingly favor the wealthy, while families earning under $112,000 will fare better under Obama’s tax plan;

* The stock market historically does better under Democrats than it does under republicans;

* McCain still wants to privatize social security and reduce benefits;

* McCain’s closest and top economic advisors have consistently put big business before the American people – working for the very financial institutions, oil companies and energy companies that benefited at the expense of American families; and

* Under his own tax plan McCain would receive a tax cut that is over 7 times the average household’s entire income.

McLobbyist Transition Team Head Was Ultimate Nixon Insider

by Old Washington preparing to carry on

There has been a bit of eye rolling and amusement at “presumptuous” McCain picking the ultimate Washington insider lobbyist to head his transition team. But (hat tip to Rick Perlstein) there is a deeper and more sinister connection and bit of news about one William E. Timmons, Sr. that hasn’t gotten mentioned much, if at all.

That is - Timmons was Nixon’s chief congressional liaison and was known as Nixon’s congressional lobbyist.

OK, fine, so he was only lobbying Congress on behalf of a President who resigned in shame after impeachment was hanging over his head.

Or not. Seems as though a conversation between Timmons and Nixon was part of the “White House Tapes” that was noted in the book, Abuse of Power - and the discussion focused on Timmons and Nixon strategizing on how to push members of Congress (and who to push) with respect to conducting “investigations” .

In one conversation on July 2, 1971, Nixon and Timmons talked about the House Internal Security Committee, its members, and who Timmons should contact in order for the committee to “resuscitate itself” and conduct a half assed investigation with its’ Senate counterpart instead of having people convicted of conspiracy in the leak of hte Pentagon Papers.

Now, obviously there is a lot here, and we don’t need to repeat all that was said or get into a lengthy explanation into the relationship between Timmons and Nixon, or how Timmons became a lobbyist or who he lobbies for (although FireDogLake has an excellent post on that) or that he has been involved in pretty much every republican administration since Nixon.

But when McCain has tossed aside campaign themes as he has with his ex-wife or his honor when he returned from Vietnam, having gone from “experience”, to “country first” to “I’m not really that out of touch with everything” to “even though I’ve been around the same Washington establishment that brought failed conservatism, corporate favors being given out like candy and aggressive foreign policy, I’m really about change”, he picks someone to head up his transition team that:

* Is known as the Washington insider in the republican establishment;
* Has been involved with the Washington insider establishment for close to 40 years;
* Knew of Nixon’s trying to improperly influence Congress to whitewash an investigation into the Pentagon Papers case;
* Was involved in the plans to improperly influence Congress to whitewash the investigation; and
* Headed Nixon’s legislative affairs office and lobbied Congress to not impeach Nixon (even toasting Nixon on the day he resigned).

This is the type of person that John McCain wants in charge of his transition team. In fact, this is the person that John McCain wants in charge of his transition team.

Clearly, McCain has left his honor in Vietnam.

McLiar's ultimate inside-the-beltway solution to the economy: Form a commission

by Vote McCain for more of the Same

Yesterday, John McCain said "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." His campaign been trying to dig out from that statement since the words left the candidate's mouth. McCain has no economic agenda. He's just going to follow the Bush path, which led us to where we are.

But, knowing that Americans are freaking out, the McCain brain trust has been scrambling to come up with an economic plan. Their grand solution: McCain will form a commission. Yep, that's it. Pretty much the most inside-the-beltway answer to any problem is: Form a commission. McCain's been in Washington for a very long time. McCain touted his bold, new plan on the TODAY Show this morning:

Gut N' Run: Lehman hired Jeb Bush as financial advisor

by I'm John Sidney McCain III and I Approve

NEW YORK, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Lehman Brothers has hired Jeb Bush, brother of the President of the United States, as an advisor to its private equity business, a source familiar with the situation said.

Lehman hired another relative of U.S. President George W. Bush last year--George Walker, a second cousin, who heads up the bank's asset management business.

Jeb Bush is the former governor of Florida.

Lehman Brothers declined to comment.

(Reporting by Dan Wilchins)

I mean, what else is there to say, really? It only took one year of financial malfeasance under members of America's "Midas touch" crime family to run a 148-year-old business totally into the ground.

And don't forget Neil Bush and the Silverado Savings and Loan.

"Silverado Savings and Loan collapsed in 1988, costing taxpayers $1.3 billion. Neil Bush, son of then Vice President of the United States George H. W. Bush, was Director of Silverado at the time. Neil Bush was accused of giving himself a loan from Silverado, but he denied all wrongdoing. [2]

The US Office of Thrift Supervision investigated Silverado's failure and determined that Neil Bush had engaged in numerous "breaches of his fiduciary duties involving multiple conflicts of interest." Although Bush was not indicted on criminal charges, a civil action was brought against him and the other Silverado directors by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation; it was eventually settled out of court, with Bush paying $50,000 as part of the settlement, as reported in the Washington Post [11].

As a director of a failing thrift, Bush voted to approve $100 million in what were ultimately bad loans to two of his business partners. And in voting for the loans, he failed to inform fellow board members at Silverado Savings & Loan that the loan applicants were his business partners.[citation needed]

Neil Bush paid a $50,000 fine and was banned from banking activities for his role in taking down Silverado, which cost taxpayers $1.3 billion. A Resolution Trust Corporation Suit against Bush and other officers of Silverado was settled in 1991 for $26.5 million."

YouTube Removes Viral Video on Palin’s Churches For Inappropriate Content

by Fire from the Pulpit

Sarah Palin was baptized at Wasilla Assembly of God and attended the church for over two and a half decades, and she has been publicly blessed by a number of pastors and religious leaders employed by and associated with that church.

Last Sunday our research team released a video, a ten-minute mini-documentary, focusing on the Wasilla Assemblies of God and the video seemed on the verge of a massive "viral" breakthrough when YouTube pulled it down, citing "inappropriate content".

At the point the video was censored by YouTube it had been viewed by almost 160,000 people. The short of it is that YouTube has censored a video documentary that appeared to be close to having an effect on a hard fought and contentious American presidential election.

HILARIOUS: RNC delegate rolled for $120k!

by We salute you, wonderful girl thief

ST. PAUL (AP) ― A delegate to the Republican National Convention says he was robbed of more than $120,000 after he took a woman to his Minneapolis hotel room.

The Denver man told police he met the woman in a bar, then took her to his hotel room at Hotel Ivy. Police say that once there, the woman made the man drinks and told him to get undressed.

The 29-year-old delegate told police that was the last thing he remembered.

The grifter took the guy's $30,000 watch, his $20,000 ring, and his $5,000 necklace.

Let me repeat that:

The grifter took the guy's $30,000 watch, his $20,000 ring, and his $5,000 necklace.

Which means that she also took about $65,000 in cash.

You know, I do okay. And in my 40 years on this planet I have never even seen $65,000 in cash.

Why the fuck does a delegate at a convention need $65,000 cash? Who was this shitwizard intending to grease?

And is it me, or does this hapless mouthbreather just somehow perfectly personify the culture of naked corruption in this party?

McCain’s Cousin Explains Why He Won’t Vote for Him

by Pride turns to Shame

The St. Petersburg Times is running an open letter from John McCain’s cousin, who lives in Tallahassee. In “Cousin John, Where Did You Go? ” Adam Vaulx Boles first explains his history and relationship with McCain, and his family’s pride at their famous member’s accomplishments.

Then pride turns to shame.

Clearly, a lot can change in eight years. Our nation has gone from a time of unparalleled prosperity and peace to one marked by debt in the trillions of dollars, record foreclosures, and a global reputation for warmongering and neo-imperialism.
“America’s working families no longer recognize you, John McCain, nor does your own.”

So, where is the straight-talking, commonsense John McCain of 2000? I’m afraid he is long gone, replaced by a desperate version of himself who seems to contradict nearly everything he once stood for.

What becomes apparent in his ideological about-face is just how out of touch McCain really is with America’s working families.

In a time when the country is facing the worst housing crisis in the memory of most Americans, McCain couldn’t even recall how many homes he owns. When asked how many homes my side of the family owns, I can answer you pretty quickly. Zero.

Just like so many working families in this country, we were nearly ruined by the ongoing mortgage and foreclosure crisis. Our family home of three generations was sold at auction last year. The story is a familiar one: We were suckered into a refinance deal during the real estate boom, and when times got tough, the near criminally deregulated mortgage companies changed the rules on us.

What was John McCain’s response to this? He lumped together all the families who fell victim to the smarmy sales pitches from subprime lenders, calling us “irresponsible,” a move the New York Times described as “mean-spirited and economically naive.”

What contortions has this new John McCain twisted himself into in order to win this election? When asked last year about his stance on abortion, he told a group of supporters, “I do not support Roe vs. Wade. It should be overturned.” This statement not only sharply contrasts with what he said back in the 2000 election cycle, but is also at odds with a majority of American public opinion…

Further, McCain’s decision to put the antichoice, creationist Sarah Palin on his ticket appears to be motivated completely by a political desire to shore up the radical right evangelical base with whom he’s been at odds for so long. This is the same woman who claimed in June “that our national leaders are sending (our soldiers) out on a task that is from God.”

A part of me is made very sad to write this article. As I’ve said, my family has followed John’s life and career with no absence of pride. If there ever were a Republican we might consider voting for, it would have been my cousin John.

But, as he continually demonstrates in this campaign, my cousin John is long gone. “Straight talk” has been replaced with “flip-flop.” Saddest all, this is the same man who, when campaigning in 2000, told a crowd of supporters, “I don’t think Bill Gates needs a tax cut. I think your parents do.”

My parents, John, need some help after the economic destruction Bush has wrought in the last eight years, but it’s clear you’re not the one who’ll give it to us. America’s working families no longer recognize you, nor does your own.

WALL ST TEETERS

"These Are The Most Extraordinary Events I've Ever Seen"

After Frantic Day, Wall St. Banks Falter

In one of the most dramatic days in Wall Street’s history, Merrill Lynch agreed to sell itself on Sunday to Bank of America for roughly $50 billion to avert a deepening financial crisis, while another prominent securities firm, Lehman Brothers, said it would seek bankruptcy protection and hurtled toward liquidation after it failed to find a buyer.

The humbling moves, which reshape the landscape of American finance, mark the latest chapter in a tumultuous year in which once-proud financial institutions have been brought to their knees as a result of hundreds of billions of dollars in losses because of bad mortgage finance and real estate investments.

But even as the fates of Lehman and Merrill hung in the balance, another crisis loomed as the insurance giant American International Group appeared to teeter. Staggered by losses stemming from the credit crisis, A.I.G. sought a $40 billion lifeline from the Federal Reserve, without which the company may have only days to survive.

The stunning series of events culminated a weekend of frantic around-the-clock negotiations, as Wall Street bankers huddled in meetings at the behest of Bush administration officials to try to avoid a downward spiral in the markets stemming from a crisis of confidence.

Oh, and on another front, seems like FEMA screwed up again in Texas

by Repugs engaged in damage control

Developing: FEMA Hiding The [Dropped] Ball

Democratic Congressman Nick Lampsom (TX-22) is right this moment (9:15 pm CDT) on Channel 13 in Houston, being as politically correct but direct as possible, while using carefully chosen words to explain how FEMA is dropping the ball big time in Texas following Hurricane Ike.

According to Congressman Lampsom almost none of the promises made by FEMA before Hurricane Ike made landfall are being honored. In addition, FEMA is controlling the story, keeping the facts from the press, and trying to hide the ball they are dropping.

Even worse is the way the Federal Government is trying to keep the media away from the disaster areas and control the story. FEMA and the FAA are stepping all over Freedom Of The Press.

More below the fold.

And on another front, seems like even your drinking water has been contaminated by

by Unregulated Free Market Bullshit

Millions Of Pounds Of Unused Pharmaceuticals Contaminating US Drinking Water

U.S. hospitals and long-term care facilities annually flush millions of pounds of unused pharmaceuticals down the drain, pumping contaminants into America's drinking water, according to an ongoing Associated Press investigation.

These discarded medications are expired, spoiled, over-prescribed or unneeded. Some are simply unused because patients refuse to take them, can't tolerate them or die with nearly full 90-day supplies of multiple prescriptions on their nightstands.

Few of the country's 5,700 hospitals and 45,000 long-term care homes keep data on the pharmaceutical waste they generate. Based on a small sample, though, the AP was able to project an annual national estimate of at least 250 million pounds of pharmaceuticals and contaminated packaging, with no way to separate out the drug volume.

One thing is clear: The massive amount of pharmaceuticals being flushed by the health services industry is aggravating an emerging problem documented by a series of AP investigative stories _ the commonplace presence of minute concentrations of pharmaceuticals in the nation's drinking water supplies, affecting at least 46 million Americans.

The Legend of John Sidney "Songbird" McCain(TM)

by military code of conduct be damned

On June 4, 1969, a U.S. wire service story headlined "PW Songbird Is Pilot Son of Admiral," reported one of McCain's radio broadcasts: "Hanoi has aired a broadcast in which the pilot son of the United States commander in the Pacific, Adm. John McCain, purportedly admits to having bombed civilian targets in North Vietnam and praises medical treatment he has received since being taken prisoner.

"The broadcast was beamed to American servicemen in South Vietnam as a part of a propaganda series attempting to counter charges by U.S. Defense Secretary Melvin Laird that American prisoners are being mistreated in North Vietnam."

McCain says he violated the Code of Conduct only when the North Vietnamese brutally tortured him. He further claims that he was so distraught afterwards that he tried to commit suicide. He has never explained why his "aid to the enemy" continued for more than three years.

Let's face it. Lipstick on a pig is a classic American phrase. And there's just no better way to describe the McCain-Palin ticket. The 'Reformer' whose whole campaign and senate office is run by a crew of high-rolling DC lobbyists? The earmark slayer whose state this year got ten times more earmarks than any other state in the country? Whose city when she was mayor got twenty times as many? The whole operation is just one big bamboozling lie. And lipstick on a pig is just using good American English to explain it. If McCain and Palin don't like it they should have thought of that before they decided to run as frauds.

Palin E-Mails Show Intense Interest in Trooper's Penalty

by Anonymous

EAGLE RIVER, Alaska, Sept. 3 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the running mate for GOP presidential candidate John McCain, wrote e-mails that harshly criticized Alaska state troopers for failing to fire her former brother-in-law and ridiculed an internal affairs investigation into his conduct.

The e-mails were shown to The Washington Post by a former public safety commissioner, Walter Monegan, who was fired by Palin in July. Monegan has given copies of the e-mails to state ethics investigators to support his contention that he was dismissed for failing to fire Trooper Mike Wooten, who at the time was feuding with Palin's family.

I got this email today. It seems real.

About Sarah Palin
I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992. Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more city council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she's like the most popular girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because she is a "babe."

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents for seven months.

She is pro-life. She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby. There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just puts things out there and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin's kind of job is highly sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their major source of income. Nor has her lifestyle ever been anything like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She's smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000 (at the time), and less than two years as governor of a state with about 670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings, which had given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a "fiscal conservative." During her six years as mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same six years, the amount of taxes collected by the city increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax, which even taxed food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren't enough to fund everything on her wish list though. Borrowed money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? Or a new library? No. $1 million for a park. $15 million-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex, which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the city didn't even have clear title to. That was still in litigation seven years later -- to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5 million for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 years without any borrowing.

While mayor, city hall was extensively remodeled and her office redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as governor she proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she recommended that the state borrow and bond for road projects, even while she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's surplus, borrow for needs.

She's not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas or compromise. As mayor, she fought ideas that weren't generated by her or her staff. Ideas weren't evaluated on their merits, but on the basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was mayor of Wasilla, she tried to fire our highly respected city librarian because the librarian refused to consider removing from the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents rallied to the defense of the city librarian and against Palin's attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the "old boy's club" when she first ran for mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys." Palin fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the city and as governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people, creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally grateful and fiercely loyal -- loyal to the point of abusing their power to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the case of pressuring the state's top cop (see below).

As mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla's police chief because he "intimidated" her, she told the press. As governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that an important factor in her decision to fire him was that he wouldn't fire her sister's ex-husband, a state trooper. Under investigation for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than two dozen contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in help. The city council person who personally escorted her around town, introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council, became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She abruptly fired her loyal city administrator; even people who didn't like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got the best, chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no background in oil and gas issues. Within months of scoring this great job, which paid $122,400 per year, she was complaining in the press about the high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this commission (who was also the state chair of the Republican Party) engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move, which some undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a gutsy fighter against the "old boys' club" when she dramatically quit, exposing this man's ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the "bridge to nowhere" after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As governor, she gave the legislature no direction and budget guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative action restored most of these projects -- which had been vetoed simply because she was not aware of their importance -- but with the unobservant she had gained a reputation as "anti-pork."

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The state party leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah. They call her "Sarah Barracuda" because of her unbridled ambition and predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and experienced manager, ran for mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together a package of legislation known as AGIA, which forced the oil companies to march to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to global warming. She campaigned "as a private citizen" against a state initiative that would have either a) protected salmon streams from pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the state's lawsuit against the Department of the Interior's decision to list polar bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for president; Sarah will be a heartbeat away from being president.

There have to be literally millions of Americans who are more knowledgeable and experienced than her.

However, there's a lot of people who have underestimated her and are regretting it.

Claim vs. Fact

"Hockey mom:" true for a few years.

"PTA mom:" true years ago when her first-born was in elementary school, not since.

"NRA supporter:" absolutely true.

Social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, but vetoed a bill that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships. (Said she did this because it was unconstitutional.)

Pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, but did nothing as governor to promote it.

"Pro-life:" mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby, but declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life legislation.

"Experienced:" Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska. No legislative experience other than city council. Little hands-on supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city administrator to run town of about 5,000.

Political maverick: not at all.

Gutsy: absolutely!

Open and transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at explaining actions.

Has a developed philosophy of public policy: no.

"A greenie:" no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.

Fiscal conservative: not by my definition!

Pro-infrastructure: no. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built streets to early 20th century standards.

Pro-tax relief: lowered taxes for businesses, but increased tax burden on residents

Pro-small government: no. Oversaw greatest expansion of city government in Wasilla's history.

Pro-labor/pro-union: no. Just because her husband works union doesn't make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

Why Am I Writing This?
First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting programs in the schools. If you Google my name, you will find references to my participation in local government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.

Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that bad things happen when good people stay silent. Few people know as much about Palin as I do because few have gone to as many city council meetings.

Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she can bump me out of. I don't belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will cost me somehow in the future. That's life.

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100 or so people who rallied to support the city librarian against Sarah's attempt at censorship.

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

Caveats
I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in spending and taxation two years ago (when Palin was running for governor) from information supplied to me by the finance director of the city of Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust for inflation? For population increases? Right now, it is impossible for a private person to get any info out of city hall -- they are swamped. So I can't verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the population of Wasilla, ranging from my "about 5,000" up to 9,000. The day Palin's selection was announced a city official told me that the current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was 5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was mayor from 1996 to 2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90s.

Palin Billed Taxpayers For Nights At Home, Travel To NCAA Game, Sled Race

ANCHORAGE, Sept. 8 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions. And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.

Biblical scholars in Colorado Springs have uncovered startling evidence that Senator John McCain may be the Antichrist. Their conclusions, while highly controversial, may have a dramatic impact on the 2008 elections, since many Bible-believing Christians have already expressed doubts about McCain's fealty to Christianity.

Is John McCain the Anti Christ? How can I ask such a question? Part is with tongue in cheek but not entirely. He is the Anti-Reagan. He claims to be a TRUE conservative and attempts to present himself in the mold of Reagan.

So does anything that is said about the Anti-Christ in the bible ring in tune with the Anti-Reagan called John (Juan) McCain?

Game Over: How Repugs Bankrupted Fannie and Freddie

by Anonymous

I don't think that the general public realizes how the impending collapse of Fannie and Freddie is a game-changer. Bear Stearns, Enron, IndyMac, those are all small potatoes in comparison to the massive size of the GSE's.
The inevitable failure of these institutions is so epic that when the epitaph of the American Empire is composed it will be Fannie and Freddie that are written large.

However, some people are shouting warnings now.

"If the U.S. government allows Fannie and Freddie to fail and international investors are not compensated adequately, the consequences will be catastrophic," Yu said in e-mailed answers to questions yesterday. "If it is not the end of the world, it is the end of the current international financial system."
"The seriousness of such failures could be beyond the stretch of people's imagination," said Yu, a professor at the Institute of World Economics & Politics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing.

Believe it or not, this warning is not the one that scares me. It is the warning from Warren Buffett that is truly frightening.

Jim Rogers: "America is more communist than China"

by Anonymous

He's only a famous investor who has outperformed the market and made lots of money, so what does he know anyway?

The nationalization of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shows that the U.S. is "more communist than China right now" but its brand of socialism is meant only for the rich, investor Jim Rogers, CEO of Rogers Holdings, told CNBC Europe on Monday.

"America is more communist than China is right now. You can see that this is welfare of the rich, it is socialism for the rich… it's just bailing out financial institutions," Rogers said.

by I'm John Sidney McSame III and I approve

Time to review McCain's poor judgment on the economy

As McCain is forced into talking about the Republican economy that he helped create, it's time to look back at what he said in the past including what he failed to say even last week. By August of 2007 - just over one year ago - the Dow had already lost 1,000 points in one month as British lender Northern Rock sent the first big shock to the market. Northern Rock was nationalized after a run on the bank and everyone who was paying attention was introduced to the downside of subprime lending. They were a casualty of the subprime lending crisis when banks stopped lending to other banks. Even putting aside the McCain-Phil Gramm connections to the subprime lending crisis, it's hard to imagine that someone running for President of the United States would not notice the impending crisis coming to Wall Street. You would think that any serious candidate would quickly bring themselves up to speed on this issue, unless they didn't see it as a problem.

Daily Kos Fannie and Freddie: Our Foreign Masters Have Spoken

by Anonymous

Update: Market Watch

Consider the description of the bailout from the: New York Times:

Investors who own the companies’ common and preferred stock will suffer. Holders of debt, including many foreign central banks, are expected to receive government backing. Top executives of both companies will be pushed out, according to those briefed on the plan. [italics mine]

Now consider the following from MarketWatch,

The top five foreign holders of Freddie and Fannie long-term debt are China, Japan, the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, and Belgium. In total foreign investors hold over $1.3 trillion in these agency bonds, according to the U.S. Treasury's most recent "Report on Foreign Portfolio Holdings of U.S. Securities."

China alone holds $376 billion in bond holdings.

Unless I am misreading something, foreign central banks will be protected, including China's...and the America taxpayer will foot that bill.

Palin makes her first gaffe. Doesn't even know what Fannie and Freddie do.

by Anonymous

To be fair, I understand her crash "Economics 101" course isn't until Thursday. More from Huff Post:

Gov. Sarah Palin made her first potentially major gaffe during her time on the national scene while discussing the developments of the perilous housing market this past weekend.

Speaking before voters in Colorado Springs, the Republican vice presidential nominee claimed that lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had "gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers." The companies, as McClatchy reported, "aren't taxpayer funded but operate as private companies. The takeover may result in a taxpayer bailout during reorganization."

Economists and analysts pounced on the misstatement, saying it demonstrated a lack of understanding about one of the key economic issues likely to face the next administration.

People are so mean to her. Can't they just ask her about snowmobiling and being Miss Congeniality and stuff? (Oh, that's right, she lied about being Miss Congeniality too. Facts are mean.)

Report: McNasty Pushed Woman In A Wheelchair

by Prison will do that to you

On Sunday, McClatchy Newspapers published a story on Sen. John McCain's oft-discussed temper, detailing one incident in which McCain allegedly pushed a woman in a wheelchair.

According to McClatchy's report, in 1996, McCain was met in the Senate office halls by a group of family members of POW-MIAs who had been pressing him to pursue more information on their relatives.

Six people present have written statements describing what they saw. According to the accounts, McCain waved his hand to shoo away Jeannette Jenkins, whose cousin was last seen in South Vietnam in 1970, causing her to hit a wall.

As McCain continued walking, Jane Duke Gaylor, the mother of another missing serviceman, approached the senator. Gaylor, in a wheelchair equipped with portable oxygen, stretched her arms toward McCain.

"McCain stopped, glared at her, raised his left arm ready to strike her, composed himself and pushed the wheelchair away from him," according to Eleanor Apodaca, the sister of an Air Force captain missing since 1967.

McCain's staff wouldn't respond to requests for comment about specific incidents.

McCain's history of hot temper raises concerns

by Old Age will do that to you

WASHINGTON — John McCain made a quick stop at the Capitol one day last spring to sit in on Senate negotiations on the big immigration bill, and John Cornyn was not pleased.

Cornyn, a mild-mannered Texas Republican, saw a loophole in the bill that he thought would allow felons to pursue a path to citizenship.

McCain called Cornyn's claim "chicken-s---," according to people familiar with the meeting, and charged that the Texan was looking for an excuse to scuttle the bill. Cornyn grimly told McCain he had a lot of nerve to suddenly show up and inject himself into the sensitive negotiations.

"F--- you," McCain told Cornyn, in front of about 40 witnesses.

It was another instance of the Republican presidential candidate losing his temper, another instance where, as POW-MIA activist Carol Hrdlicka put it, "It's his way or no way."

G. Gordon Liddy: John McCain Finds His Own Radical

John McCain has had a field day with Barack Obama's tenuous associations with Bill Ayers, a former member of the Weather Underground who is now a Chicago professor.

Obama has said repeatedly that Ayers' radical past (he was involved in a handful of bombings in the 1960s) occurred when Barack was just a child, and he repudiates those actions. Nevertheless, McCain wants more. He claimed recently:

"I think not only a repudiation but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people."

Now, however, the Chicago Tribune is pointing out McCain's own radical associations with G. Gordon Liddy:

G. Gordon Liddy connection could plague John McCain

by Anonymous

In McCain’s case, the friend is G. Gordon Liddy, the conservative radio talk-show house and convicted mastermind of the Watergate break-in.

Liddy, 77, contributed several thousand dollars to McCain’s senatorial campaigns, and this year he gave $1,000 to the presidential campaign.

McCain has appeared on Liddy’s show. And in November he praised Liddy for his adherence “to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great,” Chapman reports.

The McCain-Liddy connection would seem to be much stronger that the link between Sen. Barack Obama, McCain’s possible Democratic opponent for president, and William Ayers, the former member of the Weather Underground. The radical group formed in the late 1960s was involved in several bombings.

Ayers contributed $200 to Obama when he was running for the state Senate in Illinois. And the two served on the board of the Woods Fund of Chicago.

Obama condemned the actions of the Weather Underground. But he also noted that he was “an 8-year-old child” when they took place.

McCain criticized the Obama-Ayers connection when it became a campaign issue between Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“I think not only a repudiation but an apology for even having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people,” McCain said. Chapman suggests that McCain should do a little repudiating and apologizing of his own for his relationship with Liddy.

An Army veteran of the Korean War era, Liddy graduated from Fordham Law School and became an FBI special agent. Later he served as a prosecutor in New York’s Dutchess County.

His effort to convict counterculture Dr. Timothy Leary on drugs charges then was unsuccessful. Years later, Leary and Liddy teamed up on the speakers circuit.

Liddy joined the White House Staff during Richard Nixon’s first term in office and eventually became part of the White House Special Investigations Unit. The covert group of so-called plumbers tracked down leaks of information and spied on perceived opponents of the administration.

Liddy and E. Howard Hunt Jr., a former CIA agent, put together the 1972 plan to break into and bug the Watergate offices of the Democratic National Committee. Along with the five men caught on the scene, they were eventually convicted on charges of burglary, conspiracy and wiretapping.

Liddy refused to cooperate with prosecutors. He received a 20-year sentence that was commuted by President Jimmy Carter after more than four years of time served.

He emerged from prison in September 1977 penniless and unrepentant and remained silent on his role in Watergate until the 1980 publication of his memoir, Will.

In the book, he acknowledged that he once volunteered to kill columnist Jack Anderson, an offer that was not accepted. And he wrote that, after the Watergate break-in went bad, he volunteered to be assassinated.

“‘If someone wants to shoot me, just tell me what corner to stand on and I’ll be there,’” Liddy remembered telling John Dean, the White House counsel.

Liddy has written several more books and become wealthy through his talk show and his speaking appearances. He has also been in films and television shows, including a stint as a competitor on “Celebrity Fear Factor.”

At times, his statements have gotten him in trouble, as when he said, “If the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms insists upon a firefight, give them a firefight. Just remember, they’re wearing flak jackets and you’re better off shooting for the head.”

John Sidney McCain and G. Gordon Liddy - Still good friends

by He's a felon who conspired against US all

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns--including $1,000 this year.

Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

For his role in Watergate, which he coordinated with Hunt, Liddy was convicted of conspiracy, burglary and illegal wiretapping, and received a 20-year sentence. He served a total of five and half years in prison, including over 100 days in solitary confinement, before his sentence was commuted by President Jimmy Carter and he was released on September 7, 1977.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._Gordon_Liddy

Fox News’ Criminal Pundits

The sensationalist media inquest into Sen. Barack Obama’s associations has cheapened the national debate. It has also exposed the hypocrisy and double standard of the conservative media.

Repuglican GASLIGHT

by Anonymous

Remember the old Charles Boyer-Ingrid Bergman movie Gaslight? In it, a famous opera singer is murdered. Her niece is then seduced by the murderer, who constantly tricks her and lies to her in order to prove to her that she is crazy, so that he can institutionalize her and get the jewels he missed the first time. Gosh, what does this remind me of -- oh, yeah! John McCain, Bill O'Reilly, and the Republicans! Same motive--grand theft, same strategy--asserting with a straight face that what we all know to be true is complete wrong -- we must be crazy to think that!

When O'Reilly was challenged on calling the Spears parents "pinheads", but not the Palin parents, those gaslights kept flickering, but he denied saying it, even though it's on tape! Then there's McCain. Don't we know he's been in Washington for a generation? Don't we know he's voted with Bush 90 percent of the time? It's all on tape! Its fully attested and in the public record. But don't look at the flickering gaslights, dear. And that brooch in your purse? Don't you realize you put it there? Darling, you must be crazy!

So, the Republicans have gone beyond lying. Bush and Cheney have been great liars, really, the best. Rove has made a career, and even a philosophy of lying about everything. But there is a special cold villainy to the way they have taken it to the next level now. "Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts." Rather than repent, they plan ever more of the same. Knowing that we know what they know, they now tell us we're crazy, that black is white and cats are dogs and John McCain is a maverick and Sarah Palin is a tax cutter (hear the one about Sarah P. leaving the town of Wasilla with 19 million dollars in long term debt? You did? No, you didn't, darling. You must be imagining things)

Well, we are crazy if we let them get away with it. The whole world thinks so.

Silver State Bank Fails - Andrew McCain on the Board

by Follow the Money

Nevada regulators shut down Silver State Bank yesterday, saying that the bank failed because of bad loans on commercial real estate and land development. It was the 11th failure of a federally-insured bank this year. But this one has an interesting wrinkle - John McCain's son, Andrew, was on its board.

Why does John Sidney McCain III HATE Veterans? Why?

by Anonymous

Citizens. if you beleive that John McCain's heroic record of service makes him the veteran's friend then you need to look closely at his voting record. It is a record ofdeceit, cynicism and neglect.

Senator McCain has a long in undistinguished voting record on veterans issues. In 2006 the Disabled American Veterans awarded his a rating of 20% (versus 80% for Obama). In 2006 the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America awarded him a grade of D (versus B+ for Obama). Consider these specific votes:

Voted against adding $430 million for veterans's health care (Senate Vote 98, HR 4939, 4/26/06).
Voted against converting veterans' health care funding into mandatory spending (Senate Vote 63, S. Con Res, 3/14/06).

Voted against increasing veterans' health care spending by ending certain corporate tax breaks (Senate Vote 41, S. Con Res, 2/14/06).

Voted to kill $19 million for military and veterans' hospitals (Senate vote 7, HR 4297, 2/2/06).

Voted against establishing formula for veterans' health care funding (senate vote 251, HR 2863, 10/5/05).

Voted against protecting veterans, armed service members and spouces of deceased service members from new bankruptcy means test (Senate Vote 13, S.256, 3/1/05).

Voted to kill transfer of Iraqi reconstruction funds to veterans' health care (Senate Vote 379, S. 1689, 10/14/03).

McCain was at his most cynical and hypocritical worst during the debate on the GI Bill for the 21st Century. First he opposed it. Then he offered a bill to kill it. Then he missed the vote. Finally, he took credit for it.

Tom Ridge gets it. Calls McCain ‘John Bush.’

by McCain/Bush - Joined at the Groin

Speaking with NBC reporters last night, former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge tried to say that voters would not confuse John McCain’s policies with President Bush’s. Unfortunately, Ridge himself confused the two, calling McCain “John Bush.” Watch it:

McCain’s Convention Backdrop Epic Fail - A failure to use the internets properly?

by And they want to run the country!

The internets were abuzz immediately when this strange shot of McCain during his RNC acceptance speech gave more ammo during closeups for another Colbert Report ‘McCain Green Screen Challenge‘ to videophiles with a knack for chroma key effects, but what caught Josh Marshall’s eye was the building being used as the backdrop with the green green lawn that was providing the fodder. Initial speculation that it was one of McCain’s innumerable mansions quickly faded when his readers confirmed that it was actually Walter Reed Middle School in North Holllywood, CA (pictured on right, above), but why?

I would fire Monegan also -

by Anonymous

He leaves a violence prone trooper on the force after he's committed 4 firing offenses?? Do you have any idea of the extra liability the state of Alaska will face when this redneck trooper goes all Rodney King on a native American that he himself has already announces he is prejudiced against. If Monegan doesn't have the administrative foresight to get rid of that redneck - he doesn't belong in a position of management.

I'm afraid that I have to respectfully disagree with you Sir.

by Anonymous

Trooper Wooten is just the kind of trooper we need to keep in reserve in case we have to crack down on some journalists or anarchist hippies or innocent bystanders like those that embarrassed us all in St. Paul last week. Think Bud White from that great film L.A.CONFIDENTIAL.

Monegan has been around long enough to understand this even if Miss Alaska doesn't. He was trying to do her a favor without stating so on an unsecured phone line. I guess he's smarter than the Palin family and their cohorts.

As for liability, Alaska just has to do as the Republicans did in St. Paul. Buy a bunch of insurance from their friends.

Bottom line is that we need to keep some hair-triggered muscle on tap in case the masses start to complain too much. Lord knows that most Republicans (think Rove or Hannidy or Rush or even W) don't have the body or the stomach for the kind of work that is necessary to keep them in power.

I say keep Wooten and rehire Monegan. The jury is still out on the Palin family. Let's hope they are quick studies and/or able to evade any real journalists til after the election.

Now what are we going to do about the National Enquirer, eh?

GOP Talked of Terrorists and Iraq, But Not Veterans, Dead Troops

by GOP convention ignored the troops

I don't know why, but I thought maybe for this convention the Republican party would drop their tired fear-and-smear playbook and try something different. I guess I assumed with the American people seeming to have forgotten that we still have well over 100,000 soldiers and Marines trapped in the Iraq quagmire, that the GOP's main speakers would at least make the economy a centerpiece in their poisoning of the national dialog.

Boy, was I wrong.

Meanwhile, Economy in Freefall thanks to Bush/McCain economic policies

by What have Repugs done for YOU?

Meanwhile, Economy in Freefall

Fri Sep 05, 2008 at 02:09:03 PM PDT

Let's all take a step back from the Palinpalooza for a moment and take a look at the disastrous real world results of Bush/McCain economic policies.

The economy is still the #1 issue on voters minds. This is the issue that Democrats should hit hard on to win this election. The economy continues to worsen and McCain is offering the same failed Republican policies that have gotten us where we are today.

A snapshot of the state of U.S. and world economies does not paint a pretty picture.

Follow me over the jump, my friends, but I warn you - it is ugly.

More Americans are unemployed, and jobs decline for the 8th consecutive month.

Jobless rate jumps to 5-year high of 6.1%

The jobless rate jumped to 6.1 percent in August, from 5.7 percent in July. And, employers cut payrolls for the eighth month in a row. Job losses in June and July turned out to be much deeper. The economy lost a whopping 100,000 jobs in June and another 60,000 in July, according to revised figures. Previously, the government reported job losses at 51,000 in each of those months.

So far this year, job losses totaled 605,000.

Health care costs continue to rise.

Majority of companies plan to raise healthcare costs

Fifty-nine percent of companies intend to keep down rising health-care costs in 2009 by raising workers' deductibles, copays or out-of-pocket spending limits, according to a survey by the Mercer consulting firm.

The stock market continues its decline.

Wall street stock falls after grim jobs data

Over the holiday-shortened week, the S&P 500 fell 3.8 per cent as fears returned about the health of the global economy. That was the index’s third weekly drop and its biggest loss since February.

The housing market has not reached bottom yet and foreclosures set another new record.

Mortgage foreclosure, delinquencies reach high

Foreclosures accelerated to the fastest pace in almost three decades during the second quarter as interest rates increased and home values fell, prompting more Americans to walk away from homes they couldn't refinance or sell.

The credit debacle is not over, banks are failing.

Credit mess far from over

Saying that the current credit crunch is nowhere near done, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. chairman Sheila Bair urged banks to raise loss reserves and raise capital. In remarks delivered Friday at a Florida Bankers Association event in Sarasota, Bair said banking results for the second quarter were "dismal," and like to get worse going forward before they get better. snip

The FDIC’s "problem list" grew to 117 institutions from 90 at the end of the first quarter ... That is the largest number on the list since the middle of 2003.

Global markets are suffering and Europe fears recession, threatening the U.S. export market, one of the few areas of the economy to benefit from the fall of the dollar.

"Panic" grips global markets

In the span of just 72 hours, the S&P/TSX composite index has plunged 957 points or 7 per cent, including a 324-point tumble Thursday that could have been much worse: At one point, the index was down as much as 428 points before a few brave – or reckless – bargain hunters stepped in.

"The sentiment has gone from euphoria to panic," said John Stephenson, senior vice-president and portfolio manager at First Asset Investment Management.

Recession worries send euro to new low

Mounting gloom about the German economy pushed the euro to a six-month low against the dollar on Tuesday as a closely watched survey showed business leaders in Europe’s biggest economy more nervous about the six months facing them than at any time in the past 15 years.

But lest you despair, there is some good news - for the very rich folks like McMansions and Bush.

Worlds richest got even richer last year

The top 1 percent of all households owned 35 percent of the world's wealth last year. Meanwhile, the top 0.001 percent, ultra-rich households holding at least $5 million in assets, commanded $21 trillion -- a fifth of the world's wealth.

Barack Obama's economic plan offers solutions that will actually work for the shrinking middle class. McCain, on the other hand, wants to tax the employer's portion of health insurance premiums and make the obscene Bush tax cuts permanent.

McCain wants to not only continue to spend billions on the failed War on Terror, he wants to expand it to new territories.

Forget about the culture wars. If you are phonebanking or canvassing, this is the issue that voters want to hear about.

America can not afford another four years of economic failures.
