Response to Retort on your retort :)

This discussion is becoming a little long-winded as it seem we'll never agree. I guess we all have different ways of playing our characters and none of them is necessarily the "best".

-
This discussion hasn't bene touched in months. Figured I'd make some comments (i'm bored).
-

Even though this may seem a little contradictory I have some comments to make.

As I was posting my last message, I was in the process of starting my new Warrior who has now made lvl 10. The comments I made were based on what was happening to me in that particular game.

You will find that when you first start a new character, the equipment offered by Griswold will be lousy. In my experience you can never find anything better than a Claymore in lvls 1-3, maybe 4. I find that Griswold starts selling me better stuff once I have started a new game as this seems to reset his item lists.

-
Since I was playing in the first 2 dungeon levels only, I will agree that you have to keep restarting, but not always. I was hard to gain levels, since I could ONLY go in those 2 levels. Playing with those harsh restrictions, I followed my guide to the letter and it got me some very nice stuff. Indeed, it's hard to find good items in the dungeon, but I'm not talking mainly about the dungeon.
-

IME I have never found Studded Leather Armour until lvl 5 in the dungeon, but before that Gris had sold it to me after I started a new game.

You still really didn't answer my question, what do you save the gold on? 100 gold is not a lot IME, trust me. Small Shield AC=8 is better than any other shield you will find early on in the dungeon. A Skull Cap AC=4 is the best Headgear you will find until Helms start appearing. Leather Armour AC=13 is the best Gris will sell to a beginning character. None of this can be found in the Dungeon, except for the Skull Cap which only costs 25 gold anyway.

-
You save the gold on anything. Better armor comes along VERY rapidly, often Griz will offer some nice magical armor/weapons that give some nice bonuses. And when have you ever found a small shield at clvl 1? I don't believe I ever have. More of a pipe dream, it sounds like to me. Besides, what I find in the dungeon (often I FIND Small shields, sometimes, among other items) always suits me fine for NORMAL items. And Leather Armor not found in the dungeon? Are you nuts? I find them left and right! On dlvls 1 & 2 only, I find Leather armor. Skull caps, yeah, found them. They offer at BEST 4 armor. And besides, I'd rather have a cap with 1 AC that gives me some magical bonus than a skull cap that gives 4 AC. Save your money, and you'll be doing fine.
-

If we do our sums, 8+13+4= 25 AC. Then you add the 4 beginning AC to the equasion and you get 29 AC. AFAIK you get 1 more AC point per 5 DEX points. So this means 40/5 =8. In total this makes 37 AC. I know that this isnt anything spectacular, but don't you think it's better than nothing? I find that it gives me quite good protection until Mail starts appearing.

-
Yes, it's better than nothing. But you shouldn't even need it. Besides, Happy Feet takes care of just about everything, AND you don't need NEARLY that much AC to survive (at least, not the first 2 levels). Afterwards, well... you'll be a higher level by then, and will (probably, esp if you save your pennies) have some nice, BETTER magical or even normal gear by then. Why waste your money so early on? It IS a waste. It's been said many times, do NOT buy the measly armor Griz offers in the beginning. Sorry, but I'm sticking with this.
-

One more thing we have to keep in mind. Most newbies are careless with their Warriors, at best reckless no matter how much you tell them to be cautious. AFAIK your guide is intended for newbies and not "veterans" like us. Some AC, no matter how little it might seem to us, can be the difference between life and death for a newbie.

-
Yes, it is intended for Newbies. But the point of the guide is to make them NOT careless, NOT reckless, to make them INTO vets. Yes, some AC is good. Find it in the dungeon. Plain armor, my buckler that I started with, and a cap are all I need. Or even a Robe. ANYTHING in the dungeon is FINE. You need nothing more.
-

Well thats my opinion anyway.

-
And now you've heard mine again. Just my thoughts. I'm sticking (mostly) to what I got. Later.
