been with a lot of different people lately and have heard a lot of different thoughts and seen about 30 different styles of head coverings, no head coverings and different hair styles with coverings.
So is the head covering a doctrine ordered by God or a custom that we do not carry as Paul states in the last verse about it, in the only chapter that speaks of it? Was talking to some friends today and brought up a point a lady made over the weekend as we were discussing the different ways the thing is worn.
I had made the comment that I could not see the point in wearing a little flat thing about 4-5 in across, it seemed rather useless to me, If I am going to wear one, my thinking is that it should be more of a veil style. On the weekend the lady pointed out that she sometimes sees women wearing the little doily while wearing cut hair and shorts. she wondered what the point of it was then, Is it just to make a statement that I am a Mennonite?
She was dressed very neatly with a very modest skirt and blouse that were definitely home made but would not stand out in public, but no head covering, her hair up in a bun.
In todays discussion I mentioned this, while with about 5 other women with about that many different coverings on. When I made the commment about it just appearing like a symbol to me, when it was so small, one of the ladies pointed out that she thought that all of the headcoverings that are worn today were just that, A symbol. They felt that there is not any headcovering worn today that would compare to what was worn during the time of Paul. so the opinion was, did it matter size it was, if it is just a symbol?.
I just know that trying to explain why there is 2 head coverings in the H has always been a struggle for me. It was so much easier when I started wearing just one veil style one. I do think I am really tired of black, maybe I should make me a purple one.
You probably realize that the topic you have raised is quite controversial. The responses that you have already heard in the past and will hear in the future have been and will be very varied and on both sides of the issue. May I suggest that you not listen to any of them.
Read the Word yourself (as I'm sure that you have done already). Perhaps read the applicable verses in several translations. Then ask the Lord to show you His way for YOU. Once you have sought the Lord's guidance in this area with an open heart, and He has shown you, then don't be concerned with what everyone else says, whether their view or practice agrees with yours or not. Be content that you have sought God and that you are endeavoring to follow His way for you. I believe that The Lord wants that from His people.

There are lots of groups were the sisters don't wear a material covering. None of the holiness groups do. They would hold that the the long hair is the sisters covering.
1Co 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
And while there was a custom in the new testament church time that jewish and Christian women wore veils (not a small 4" x 4") Paul told that the the church of God had no such custom.
1Co 11:16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

Where did the idea that in a multitude of councilors there is safety? Do you hold this view in other areas. If so that would exclude a person from listening to preaching messages, testimonies, exhortations, counsel, and advise. Doesn't sound like a very Biblical view to me.
I think Andrew was simply saying don't listen to any of those who are all disagreed, and likely hooked on various old traditions, and rather look straight at the Bible, and which is very good advice. In a multitude of councilors their is safety, yet not in a multitude of confused and blind guilds, possibly bent on defending various old traditions.
Now may I go as far as to give some Bible verses pertaining to what kind of a covering women should wear? These verses should some ideas regarding what kind of covering, Bible obeying women should wear, be it a small cap, a big cap, a black cap, or a white cap, or a hanging cloth, or possibly even a wig with long hair, especially for a woman who have their hair cut short. These verses read, "13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? 15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for [Greek instead of] a covering [Greek veil]." (1 Cor 11:13-15). Please let those verses soak in.
May I also give these verses? "6 ...if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. 10 For this cause ought the woman to have power [Greek liberty] on her head because of [Greek or with] the angels. (1 Cor 11:6&7&10).
Yet I realize knowing how to wear this covering is a big issue among many religious people, some even having significant church disputes about how the strings on their caps should be arranged. May God have mercy on us and may we not be as those where to whom the below Scriptures were directed, "Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition." (Mk 7:9).
Qwerty, I appreciate your zeal and the many Scriptures you sometimes give. Yet I wonder if you realize how far removed truth is from much of religion today.
LL, you have probably heard my testimony on the headcovering. Somehow I feel because God will not tolerate idolatry, if a person places too much emphazis on omething, it could be wrong for them and not wrong for someone else. calledoutPTL

Probably not. I hold that 95% to 99% of people professing salvation in US and Canada are deceived and just have a form of godliness that denies the power to live holy. The situation very well may be worse than that.

You are dead wrong on this one. It is worse than you say.
THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS NO NOT ONE!
IF WE SAY WE HAVE NO SIN WE LIE WE DECEIVE OURSELVES AND THE TRUTH IS NOT IN US.
100% of the world's population has a level of deception.
Now if you think God only overlooks your level of deception...Houston we have a problem!

LL, here is my take on it. God can be discerned by nature, by common sense, by bible reading, and/or by hearty council. (among other things)
Anyway, if you take something that isn't yours, you "feel bad" If you touch inappropriately, you "feel bad" if you "expose" yourself you feel bad.
If you lie, cheat or steal, act proud, get angry without cause, lust ect, you feel bad. ALL of these things produce natural guilt. If you think or pray about why you feel bad, it can be naturally discerned why since the basest of all principles was was broken (love your neighbor)
Now go to the idea of a headcovering, what spirit motivates the guilt?
