Since I live within walking distance from work and groceries, bank and other necessities I got rid of my car a year ago and began taking public transit to be a bit more eco-friendly. This year I've been trying to avoid transit and walk wherever I can, weather permitting.
About eight years ago I also started recycling plastics, newspapers, tin cans and other paper products. It takes a bit of time sometimes to sort through everything for the right bins but it's something small I can do.
I should take the soda bottles back for the deposit refund, but I usually save those up and then give them to beggars or other less fortunate street people. I prefer that over giving them money straight out, something about needing to work a little bit for the cash. Anyway, it always makes me feel good to see how grateful most of them are for the chance at a few cents.

We've been trying to car pool as much as possible the last while, although it probably doesn't make for all that much less miles given the locations of both our workplaces.
As far as recycling goes, the program in Winnipeg is pretty much a joke, with a lot of stuff that you put in the blue box ending up in the landfill once it's been sorted through at the recycling depot. In our neighbourhood, putting out the blue box for pickup basically means that people walking down the back lane will root through it, make a mess and then the wind blows it around. Oh, yeah, the recycling truck rarely even comes down our lane. I think we're the only ones on the block who ever put out a box anyway. So, we've gotten rather disillusioned about recycling, despite the fact that we definitely support the concept.
For starters I drag my butt out of bed every morning. I provide goods for others and in turn they give me and my chilluns something to eat. In the process of working and living I consume the goods of other people and I help feed them. It's called capitalism! This is mainly what I do to make the earth a better place. Of course we do some basic things around here like mow grass and gravel the driveway. Mowing the grass is a waste of time and energy in my mind but my wife thinks it's cool.
Frankly I'm a bit messed up mentally with this whole save the earth concept.
We refuse to allow anhydrous ammonia to be injected into our land. I love organic gardening, hate pests in my garden and try to get rid of the without chemicals, use organic fertilizer, buy organic beef, and tear up and down the road in a huge fuel consuming monster. (Safety...you know and I really need a comfortable sturdy vehicle for the amount I drive..ahum) I travel many miles a year a lot of them for pleasure, a 100 km hike for a relaxing ride to Starbucks is not unheard of, aye Tammy?
I burn my trash, I don't take it to the land fill cause I think the over population of rats are more of an issue where I am then the ozone layer. (plus who likes dragging the crap to the end of my long driveway to have the neighbors cats litter the roadway with my Tim Horton cups that have been riding around southern Manitoba for days first because I refused to throw out the window in the first place.
I buy prepackaged goods and then compact them before I take them behind the barn to burn them....(what the heck am I thinking???? Heavier bags???)
I love chemicals in my hair, nails, and body lotions, but want to buy paint and cleaners without them.
I turn out the lights when I leave a room, but open the window and turn up the heat when I go to bed so I can have fresh air.
I do loads of towels a week, everyone must have a clean one every shower, one for their hair one for the body...get this... then I like to dry them outside to save energy while never considering that I have used way to much water.
So what am I doing for the Earth?
We aren't even populating it, we are just replacing ourselves, that's is about all.
I've been an avid recycler for years. Recently our community has developed an excellent recycling program.
I also drive a diesel jetta that gets 50 miles to the gallon on highway.
My husband and I farm using integrated pest management and I don't kill the spiders in my house. I relocate them.
I try to cut down on water use, without much success, and grow or buy local foods, as much as possible. I eat grassfed beef.
I raised a daughter who is an 'environmentalist.'
That's the plus side.
Meanwhile i drive an old gas guzzling dodge pickup between farms. I drive when I can walk. I like deep, hot baths, have a wood furnace, dry my clothes in the dryer, have a freezer full of meat and never switch my computer off.
I've also raised a son who is a free-enterprise capitalist, and another son who is going to work in an open pit coal mine.

Xep, almost seems I remember you burning a bunch of old hay one night? Something about the whole town being covered in smoke the next morning....ROFL tell us about it

I was wondering what has been keeping you so busy! Now I know.

You are being a baaaaaad boy! Even tho at times I use the slash, burn, kill tactics...there are lines I don't cross!
The problem is the SOS smoke signals for help by and large went unnoticed. If you are in dire straights again, just use the phone!

Ha, whitewalls? Well,I am not sure if they were. One was a wheelbarrow tire, and I don't think that I had the "fancy" version. The other one.... It had a narrow stip of white on it. It was way too fancy for my pickup, so it just simply had to go.
Note: I do not aprove of tire burning. I did say that they accidently got burned. (just trying to keep the "sky is falling global warming alarmists" happy here too. Ya know?)
