The Holdeman's may never be investigated by the law on that large a scale since they don't have the blatant control and abuse. However, I did identify very strongly with the issues the main character of the show was dealing with.
If you didn't see it, she was taken away from the cult by her mother who escaped and took her out 5 or 10 years ago. As an adult, she has recently been drawn back to the compound in Texas to see if she could locate a girl (step-sister I believe) that she had felt close to and wanted to locate. As she questioned the people about the girl and their well-being, she said she felt their responses were canned; they spoke according to a script.
She did eventually find her sister. The whole episode brought back memories that she felt she'd dealt with and it was traumatic to revisit them. One of the things she talked about was her difficulty with trusting people and with relationships as a result of the way she was raised.
The thing that is strikingly similar to the H (other than the style of dress and hair) is that they truly believe that what they are doing is right. As the girl in the piece stated, they feel very strongly they will go to hell if they don't do all the precribed things they do. They are right and everybody else is wrong.
And so, if you're not in their cult you're going to hell. |
