Oil

Let's not remember that getting to the root of our high oil prices was one of the main issues Democrats were running on in 2006. The mantra was that if they had a majority in Congress they were really going to tackle this problem. What was oil back then? Around $60 a barrel. Now it's $140 a barrel  with no end in sight. Seems all these stupid people know how to do is obstruct our oil companies from drilling for our own.

 Garfield on the oil crisis

A lot of folks can't understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in our country.
~~~
Well, there's a very simple answer.
~~~
Nobody bothered to check the oil.
~~~
We just didn't know we were getting low.
~~~
The reason for that is purely geographical.
~~~
Our OIL is located in
:
~~~

Alaska
~~~
California
~~~
Coastal Florida
~~~
Coastal
Louisiana
~~~
Wyoming
~~~
Colorado
~~~

Kansas

~~~
Oklahoma
~~~
Pennsylvania

And

Texas
~~~
Our dipsticks are located in DC.
Any Questions? NO? Didn't think so
If the USA drilled more, and built more refinerys, you think the price of oil would come down? I am not an anylyst, but I seriously doubt it would significantly drop the world price of oil. And I don't believe for a minute that the oil companys would supply fuel to the domestic market for one penny less than what they can get on the world market.
The only way to cheap gas is for government intervention and taking control of the country's natural resources. But, that would be socialism bordering on communistic principles, which brings it's own set of problems.
So whats left to do? Suck it up and pay thru the nose and make Exxon and Shell even happier.
This was taken from a website....
"For oil-producing nations, subsidies are a way of sharing the natural-resources largesse with the population. Venezuela has the cheapest gas on the planet at 12 cents a gallon. Iran and Saudi Arabia rank as the second- and third-cheapest places to buy gas, at the equivalent of 40¢ and 44¢ a gallon, according to a May 08 survey by Associates for International Research."
I don't want their leaders running my country though.
RM, the last barrel of oil will cost ten million dollars. Would you care to explain why we should deplete our piggy bank when we can buy it abroad? Leave our reserves in the ground for a rainy day, just in case the Saudis stop selling to us, and we need to fuel an F16 or two.
Our own oil? Now there's a joke! "Our own" is a meaningless term, the oil fields are leased, explored, drilled and refined by coporations (often multi-national) whose only allegiance is to the dollar (or nowadays the euro). If it is truey "our oil" why then is the Alaska production sold to Japan?
RM, I really don't get you.
Lets say that houses could only be made out of trees. Lets say that Canada had a huge crop of trees to harvest and sell, and America had already harvested our trees and we only had a few young spindly youngsters growing. Why in the hell would we cut them down and consume ours, if we could purchase Canadian timber and let ours continue to grow?
I take a contrarian approach to this oil thing. I believe oil should be more expensive. I believe it should be so expensive that we think twice before we buy a new SUV that makes 13 miles per gallon. It is an exhaustable resource and we squander it with reckless abandon. The same mentality which drives the American to have seven credit cards all maxed out with shoes and stereos at 19 percent interest is what drives our consumer mentality towards energy.
In Canada and US it is a know fact for years Murphy's Law or someones that our expenses rise to meet the income. Now it has changed to our expenses rise to meet our income and credit limit. And the exception to the rule are the people (about 5%) who read Proverbs and seek wisdom and use their talents and Money a little more wisely.
Scott, our economy cannot handle $140 a barrel oil. And there is no reason it has to be this high other than that the demand is higher than the current supply. To meet demand we are going to have to up the supply. We've got all kinds of oil available...we just have to get it. In another 100 to 200 years if they aren't still finding new oil reserves they will have found other economical forms of energy.
Once America gets fed up with the environmentalists that are preventing us from building new coal plants, nuclear plants etc. they will vote these people out of office and life will continue. But we and our economy will suffer until that is accomplished.
So far as using the other countries oil first and saving ours for later...I think that idea was fine while oil was at $40 but those days are gone. And what about China drilling 50 miles off our shorelines where we cannot even drill. And they are using slant drilling to stick their oil suckers into OUR reserves. So long for saving it for later.
