Day 445 Sacred Sea
Friday, 11 July 2008
Wind E 10 knots, Course NNE, Speed 3 knots, Position 16° 56' S by 106° 49' W

I am now sailing in the Sacred Sea. It is empty and free of all land. No ships pass here. The cruising sailors pass to the N on their way to Polynesia and a few racing sailors pass far to the S on their way to Cape Horn. The wind and the ocean currents are unpolluted coming up out of the Southern Ocean. It is a place where I feel at one with nature and the universe. Here I tread very reverently knowing that the gates have been opened for me. The benevolent winds know their speed and direction between the hot variables of the N and the cold variables of the S. I journey here in an eternal state of mind knowing that this shimmering surface has looked this way for millions of years before man ventured upon these waters. I still meditate and do yoga. My daily work is my art and my prayer.

There are misty clouds all around. I hope to catch rain. The wind suddenly stops and picks up from the opposite direction and blows the sails aback. How odd. I lower the jib and reset the sails. Fifteen minutes later the wind stops and blows from the opposite direction. I pull the jib back up and reset the sails and get back on our original course NE. This is strange. Then I realize it is not nature that is strange, it's me. My imperfections of a wandering mind out of my complete control is a sacrilege in the great blue cathedral. I do my best to stop my thoughts because this is my opportunity to purify, unify and fly.

Reid

Thanks for posting that spectacular writing, Dale. I may have heard this guy on a pod cast several months ago. There is something appealing about the sailing life, but I suspect I will always be a land rat!
