He looks and talks like my cuz! He's got a good thing going down there with his bakery and catering business. Lucky to be alive tho...he was almost killed last summer when he got run over by his bulldozer.
Since I'm near the Mecca, Lonetree, there are serveral holdeman restrauants in our area, one in Burns, one in Durham, one in Galva. All of them excellent. I sure get stares though, when I'm done eating I fire up a Viceroy, don't know if they don't like me dropping the ashes on the floor, then crushing my cigarett out on the plate, or what, but aah,, nothing like a smoke after a good meal.
Makes me hungry watching that .... mmmmmmm! One thing is for real... the Holdies do know how to cook ... I still keep up with some of that myself... but when i am at family gatherings, i notice the richness even so... all the sauces, whipped toppings, and cream cheese... how yummy! but wow, one feels stuffed so fast...
One thing they all have in common is short hours. Both Burns and Durham are only open for the evening meal
at 5pm, on Friday, not any other evening, Galva open only on Thursday @ 5. Both Galva and Durham are buffet's
and worth the drive even from New York!
Well TR , You're right about buffets, but these are not your normal canned stuff thats been out since noon,
these are really good and fresh, pies galore. Excellent buffets, beats any I've ever been to.
>>Uhhhh, it's called comfort food. Them Holdies need all the comfort they can get!<<
Interesting theory, VS. But it does make sense. The question is though, how do so many Holdewomen remain slim when they prepare and eat that sort of food? Are they bulimic or something?
FYI Just want to make somethin clear here. the Dutch Oven in Grifton is not presently run by H. It is on its 4th set of managers in 2 yrs. Ben(H) moved his to New Bern 2-3 yrs ago where he now runs a resturaunt down town called the Bakers Sqare. The Dutch oven is still H owned but as that man is recovering from being totally paralyzed with Epstein Barr syndrome, he no longers even runs his store that the Dutch oven resides beside.
our daughter worked for the second H family that ran it, for a yr and then for the first non-H, before changing to work at the Baker's square before we moved her to KS where she is joyfully teaching school. It is on its 3rd non H manager now and only a couple if any H still work there.

OS I remember you from when I was a small boy. Gotta run but just wanted to let you all know your always welcome at the Dutch Oven in Clarksdale.
Hey Dustin! How y'all doin down yonder in Clarksdale? I feel flattered that you remember me. Say hey to your folks for me and y'all come see us now, y'hear!
I was always taught that no one can cook like the Holdemans. That is how they make you fear the loss of the potlucks, etc, but I have found quite the opposite to be true. Some people can't cook at all, but the ones who can are awesome. I have two groups of people I meet with where we have potlucks, and they are both fabulous. One woman does a 3 layer coconut cake piled with white icing and coconut, one man does fabulous barbeque, one woman does all kinds of Mediterranean dishes, her spinach pie and lamb chops are divine. I have NEVER eaten as good as I have since I got out into THE WORLD! Holdies can cook alright, but so can plenty of other people. There is a bakery in our town which would be done a great favor by the presence of some good Holdeman women or even men. Holdemans are good at bakeries, I'll have to admit.
VS, I agree. I met and married a woman of Italian descent raised in a German family. I'm getting fatter every year!! She is the most amazing cook and should be professional. However, the baking goes to those of Dutch descent, holdies and pretty much anyone from a Dutch background.
VS and Peter: I too would like to support the thoughts we've heard. I married a woman who is not of Holdie background, although she is of 'worldly' Mennonite (GC) background. She is an extremely good baker as well as a cook. As far as her baking goes, I would put money on her to outbake a Holdewoman. As far as her cooking goes, she'd beat most of them hands-down. Not only does she serve traditional Mennonite foods (her somma borscht is excellent, and the rollkuchen she makes are also quite delectable), she also can cook gourmet-type food, as anyone who has been over for dinner can attest. She also does ethnic foods and her cooking is usually more flavourful than what I have generally experienced in Holdeland. I will say this, though: My grandma could make better paska bread. (But don't tell Tanis).
Yes, I forgot about those jams and jellies. She didn't make any this year, unfortunately, since she had a contract with the Manitoba Department of Education and the Canadian Cancer Society to write a medical physics unit for the provincial grade 12 physics curriculum and then she got a new job as a principal, which meant that she had to go back to work earlier than when she was teaching.
See, she's a good, traditional 'hausfrau' AND a smart, accomplished career woman who makes twice as much as I do, never mind the fact that she's pretty hot and has a good personality to boot. How did I get so lucky?

Steve, there’s something about a woman who knows what she wants in life and goes out and gets it that you and I both appreciate.

I sometimes wonder what kind of steak or meat, meat lovers are going to eat in heaven where there is no death. Meat is really not a prestigious food. Yet surely heaven will have foods better than meat.
