"The home, the greatest of all institutions, must be in command of the parents. God holds parents responsible for the government of the home. The home is the springboard of society. In a broader sense, the individuals in the home make up our churches and the nations in general. When the proper discipline is not administered in the home, it presents serious problems in the church and nation."

obviously he is not a true holdie for they feel all discipline arises in conference idolatry and the home is disciplined by the church instead of the church by the home.
Fred, D.J Koehn was not the type of H leader that you have seen. As much (or little) as I know of him, he was a reasonable Christian leader. He was the teacher at the Tucmcari Boys class in 1960, when I attended there that year.
DJ Koehn was one of many leaders who shaped my view early on in the H church. I have said before, and say again, (quoting my mother's letter of February 1976) ; "There's something funny going on in the church". This is the authoritarian (funny) church you have got to know. It was not that way all the time.
Edited to add: Mother used the word funny meaning "strange".

Daniel Koehn was a very good evangelist who had successful tent revival meetings back in the late 1950's and early sixties. That came to a halt when the panel came. He we were still h at this time. Something happened to the man overnight, and should we say his spirit was broken? cause he never could preach the same afterwards. That is our opinion of course. A changed man, and not to the better. calledoutPTL
Daniel J was one holdeman minister I have to say, I truly loved. I was a superintendent of a large apartment complex in Bettendorf Iowa, Daniel and Francis were going to hold tent meetings about 50 miles from there but they made an out of the way jog to stop in and visit with my wife and I. Of course I had quite long hair, smoked cigarettes(Viceroy, of course), and they stayed for a couple of hours, we gave them a tour of the complex and the town, they had a prayer with us and parted, never once saying, "When you coming our way?". I would make a special effort to visit him in Monte when ever I went back home. He was in my opinion the finest I've ever known. He counseled my mother and Father during the panel days, and made a comment about the panel I'll not repeat.Calledout is correct about him. He's one holdeman that DID make heaven.
You all are right about Daniel J. He truly was a wonderful person, and an intellectual if there ever was one in the holdeman realm. When he got up to speak, you knew that what he would say would have substance. A deep thinker, and a wealth of knowledge. I had some good visits with him.
His brother Earnest was out for like 30 years and he was a minister in another church a lot of that time. He re-joined(H) in his later years and was elected minister and I really enjoyed listening to him too. I liked his style of preaching. When he got up there he didn't say all the usual, 'Christian Greetings, it feels good to be in the house of worship again, I see the house is well filled'... He would just start right in with his topic like, When Jonah was in the whale he... I get so tired of all the same ole opening statements. Did I hear cookie-cutter? I like originality. A person that can say it like it is. (Kind of like Scott?) In other words, be your own man.
No Fred, he never was exed although he had to rein in his flair for individuality somewhat after the pane/purge days.

Ah, man this is bringing back memories. I would concur with what was said about Daniel J. His wife was very special too. She was my mother's sister, so I have many pleasant memories of family gatherings and Uncle Daniel teasing the children. My father made a comment once that he didn't appreciate Daniel's sermons cause he preached to loud. Of course in my impressionable mind that little tidbit waited like a ticking bomb until the right moment when Daniel was getting the best of me, (again) and in a crowded family setting I let him know what my father thought of his preaching. Oh the innocence of childhood! I don't recall that it affected him at all. I wish you all could have heard the sermon that was preached by his nephew Don D. Koehn at his funeral. I found it very inspiring! With my father's sense of humor together with Daniel J.'s and their wives being very sober, conscientious people, created the setting for many laughs.
Forreal, I remember Daniel telling me about a dream he had prior to Francis's death. Did he relate that to you or your dad?
I went to his funeral, wouldn't ya know,,,, I went to the wrong church! Was late for his funeral!!

That's right Forreal, Francis was a special lady too. I wish I could have been there for both of their funerals.
Yes your dad had a sense of humor!(His boys did too,ha!)

Uh Fred, then that means there aren't many "true holdies" in the CGCM then, because most people I know would actually quite solidly agree with what BrentU posted.
