A letter to Grace and our northern friends

Grace, thanks for your letter from the north - the land of white nights in the summer. In the more advance outhouses down here, there's a crescent moon craved in the wall under the eave for light. Other than that the outhouses are dark. So we don't read in them. But in my old farm house, there's stacks of the renown New York Times among a little dust and some old furniture. So we do alright with keeping up with the news in the world.

Outside the trees have lifted up their arms for the winter, and the wind and cold from your land sweeps in on us more liberally now. Up in the garret at night, I pile the blankets on when jack frost has creeped in under the twinkling stars, or when the rain pecks at the north window. But if the batteries are good, the car will start in the morning. It's nothing to give thanks for down here like in your land.

The Kansas steppes are beautiful this time of the year with its patchwork of green wheat fields and the tall red grass waving in the wind. We hardly ever get a frozen tundra down here, but when we do we're a little immobile.

Well I've come to the end of my page. That's all I have for now. O! and the Kansas sun is blood red and going down. And it has been thanksgiving day here.

Farewell, and write again soon.

PS. put you car on the sled and come and see us. When you hit warmer country, put the dogs in the back seat and the sled in the trunk, and drive on down.

Brent

Grace:

You sure are high tech. We've always just gone out onto the frozen tundra and dug away the snow to find a few handfuls of dead grass for that, but it does get itchy and scratchy sometimes.

By the way, did you hear about old Mr. and Mrs. Frank Toews from Neubergthal? Apparently the other day they fell asleep and left a couple of their oil lanterns burning. Their igloo got so warm it started melting from the inside out and the water got so high in there that they almost drowned in their sleep and barely got out alive. Their igloo is beyond repair, though.

You guys are way to advanced and wasteful in your choice of wiping material. I've found a much more appropriate vehicle with which to clean by my backside and that is old MOTs.

I start with "The Editorial", continue on with "Your Ministers Speak", and, just for good measure, finish off with "Baptisms" and "Reacceptances" .

I use **** material for it's intended use, to clean other ****.
