Here's a song.

The original of this song is by a really hot bluegrass trio named Three Ring Circle. My son laid down a really nice acoustic rhythm track for me, and I added the bass, two acoustic, and two electric guitar solos. The acoustic solos of the verses are basically note-for-note copies of the original song (although done with a dobro) and the electric lead solos for the chorus are improvised and rocked out a little bit for contrast.

Yeah! I like it!
I wish I could download this and burn it on a disc so I could hear it on good speakers. The sound quality is 100% better than YouTube, but my computer speakers still don't do it justice.

Only one suggestion, Stan, if I may be so bold, add some percussion in the electric lead parts. I could hear it as I was listening.

Fantastic!

Very nice, Scott. It sounds very clean and professional. Your guitars sound real good. Whatever type of recording setup you're using is definitely doing the job. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Scott,
I can't wait to listen to it. We are in Nashville visiting our son and daughter and the laptop I have has no sound so I have to wait till I get home.

Scott, you really did a professional sounding job on this one. The best instrumental I have heard in a long time! Your fuzzy lead guitar in here is tremendously tasteful. I thought I may have heard a Martin Barrie influence a couple of times? Great job on Anthony's rhythm also. This is going on my ipod!

Thanks for the complements, I appreciate it.

I have to thank Anthony also. I am really proud of him. That acoustic cross-picking for the first 30 seconds and last 40 seconds of the song is all his doing. It sounds great because he played the entire piece through, recording over the stereo mics, and panned that track all the way left. Played it again, recording on another track while listening to himself over the headphones and panned that all the way right. So what you actually hear is a stereo version of himself playing in unison, but that is what gives the sound that rich, chimey, three dimensional chorusy effect. He is playing a Martin D-18GE. By the way, you have to use headphone or a really good system to hear these details. You would not believe difference in sound between my computer speakers a good set of headphones. A lot of the Martin "chime" and woody tone is lost when I use the computer speakers.

Jerry, it was recorded with a BOSS BR600 digital recorder with on-board stereo mics. Just sitting on the dining room table. Pretty redneck actually, but at least after two mishaps, I did have the brains to unplug the telephone.

OS, regarding the drum track, they are included in the chorus sections. It is really a mixing question, i.e., just how salient to make the different parts. Since this is more of an acoustic-type instrumental, I chose to try mix the levels so the the kick drum complemented the bass guitar, in a way, giving the bass guitar an almost physical thump, or looking at it another way, to make the drums almost like they are playing chords, but in any case, not totally separate sounding. Also, you may not have noticed, but if you listen to the electric guitar solos closely, it becomes very obvious that I am also playing a very clean sounding rhythm riff on an electric guitar. It is the same telecaster used for the lead solos, but with an extremely clean syncopated chunka chunka sound, but this blends in with the bass guitar and drums pretty much. If you heard the mix without the clean telecaster rhythm, you would immediately notice a huge difference. It would sound thin and empty, but when its there, it just blends in and provides a backdrop for the lead solo(which is what it is supposed to do).

Anthony is also playing his acoustic cross-picking thing through all of this but that sweet acoustic sound is pretty much covered up by the electric frenzy. For the lead guitar tone, I used a small vacuum tube amplifier with one 12" speaker sitting in front of the recorder. I "cooked" the overdrive sound with quite a bit of "chorus" effect because a Fender Telecaster uses a single-coil pickup at the bridge position, and a Tele is very bright. The high notes had some jaggies that almost hurt my ears, so cooking that sound through a a chorus effect softened it up quite a bit, and also made it sound bigger.

I'm kinda burned out on the song, but I would like to remix it to deal with some issues that I noticed later.

Okay, Scott.
I downloaded the file and burned it to a disc. I then played it on a Technics deck with Bose speakers. Wow! Just as I suspected, the computer didn't do it justice. I now hear every note and nuance. This is a fantastic piece of music! I'm very impressed!

Thanks!!

By the way, I'm remixing today, jazzing up the front end just a bit, fixing some volume problems (jacking up the drums just a tad like you said), getting rid of a bunch of noise, clanging and banging around, fixing some misc problems (smoothness between sections, etc.), and adding a bass solo, and maybe adding some Latin-flavored noodling at the end. The new version will be much more listenable.
