If your wife is real smart, they all stripped the dirty stuff outside the back door and were in charge of their own laundry, right?
Used to see that happen across the street when the neighbor boys went mudding.
Mine could never figure out why I wasn't enthusiastic about that kind of stuff, so the poor things were deprived. Course they were usually kept busy with the usual Holdi pastimes of singing in nursing homes, trampoline jumping, Volleyball, softball, camping on the river, Sledding, ice skating, Hockey, hunting deer and working on grandpa's farm. that produced enough broken arms and legs for my lifetime.
Your wife is definitely braver than me, either that or she walks around praying continually when they go off like that, till they get back in one piece.
Course we saw the bad side more than others since LM ran on an EMS sqad that picked up the pieces when things went wrong. kinda tainted my world view of enjoyable past times. So I got a couple boys that think mom is just plain pathetic and no fun.

Paris, and Ll, the kids pretty well do their own laundry after kindergarten! so momma is sort of off the hook:0

They wanted to use my pressure washer when they got home! Made me mad cause I didn't want it to freeze up. SO I hope they blew it out good!

Those boys have been having a great time on those 4 wheelers, Ben just got yzf450, his brothers both got 660 raptors so he thought he would one up on them!

I have an old grizzly 600 and it will climb where I dare not go! SO if they make it up in their hot rods, my grizzly probably will too.

They'll probably go out again tomorrow, if anyone wants to come?

Re: 4 Wheeling!

January 2 2009, 8:22 PM

yes, mine is nice! 13 horse honda!

It was in a rv trailer dealer yard, they used it to wash the trailers and ran over it accidentally!.

So since I am such a regular dumpster diver, and they were cleaning up the yard, they gave it to me!!

so I put the bent up gas tank for sale on ebay, with a message that if anyone had a good one to please contact me!

A couple of people asked my why any one would want a bent up tank, but one guy had a new one for $25!

So I got a tank that way and was pretty stoked! I have had it for over 5 years now!

Re: 4 Wheeling!

I used to be quite a dumpster diver myself, actually more of a road side trash picker in our town we call it "junking". Here is a picture of a dresser that was given to me by a friend of mines father. We helped him move and they were going to put it on the curb, I didn't really like the dresser but I couldn't see it just being left on the curb or going to the dump. So I took it, I thought it was ugly and it was in my garage for the whole summer before I let it inside, then about 2 years later on the same street (that the dresser would have been left on) but different house I was driving by and saw the mirror leaning against the trash, so I picked it up because I thought it would go with the dresser. That was about 7 years ago.
When it was in the garage I had a guy tell me that it was very, very old. He could tell by the way the bottom of the drawers were planed. I like it now, it's one of the few antiques I have.

[linked image]

Here is a bird feeder that I found,,the very last thing I ever picked up some 5 years ago or so. I stopped picking things up because I no longer have my little green Ford Ranger with the extended cab. I loved that truck I could pick just about
anything up in it.

[linked image]

And here is the next thing I will be using the pressure washer on, I picked this up on the side of the road about ten years ago, I haven't given it any attention except the neighbors did borrow it once to have pictures taken by a photographer next to their pond..

I made this this summer to hold all the utensils, I got the wheel out of the junkyard, the tines on the outside are from two garden rakes, and the inner tines are from an old pitchfork.

that thing holds lots of stuff!

Fred,
Where did you get that cheese grater? We got one like that as a gift when we were married and it got a little old and rusty and we threw it away. But we have not been able to find another one like it.

Good job Fred, You had to do some welding on that thing.

Mark try a small town hardware store for the cheese grater or a farm store or mill. I was wondering about the large wire pastry,, mixer,, whip thingy..I have been trying my hand at pastry making and it requires a mixer with much more power than the one I have. I do ok just mixing it by hand for now.

That is a good idea do I have to actually boil the linseed oil..? I guess I could google it and find out.

I know the bench needs to be power washed though it has a crusty grayish black film on it. I'm going to need the bench for Spencer's graduation party that will happen this spring.

Re: 4 Wheeling!

That big whip came from the "junkyard", somebody hauled a whole restaurant there, but I only got that whip and a nice heavy spatula.

About the welding, yes there was a lot of welding, in that thing, but that is easy for me, everyone of my working boys do welding for a living, so it is sort of second nature to do welding. Most of them are way better at welding than me, so I need to remind myself that 'I taught them"

We had a simple "rake" mounted there and it was so full of stuff that it was continually falling off.

About the "boiled" linseed oil, that is about all you can buy. They "boil" it to make it so it sets quicker. I sprayed my deck and rails this year, using 5 gallons of the stuff!

It is about $15 per gallon by the 5 gallon, there is a "margarine" fix as well if you need a lot of wood done like fence, and need to save money. Chevron makes a product called "shingle" oil. In the old days it was called 'floor and shingle oil. It is a manufactured linseed oil fake, and is pretty cheap!

I had forgotten about it till this summer! I was taking some junk paint and stuff to the dump, and in the dump place where you leave the paint there was a 5 gallon half full of shingle oil! SO I took it home and sprayed the deck on a rental! Made it look great and dried pretty good too!

If you want to really cheap out I painted my fences this year with hydraulic oil that had a little water in it so I couldn't use it in the tractor! It tickled the neighbors that I "oiled" the fence!

anyway.......

Fred I used boiled linseed oil on my deck and also a swing, both started turning black the next year. I ask a school shop instructor about it and he said boiled linseed oil is not for outdoor furniture or decks, but, He said you can put it on, let it dry really good for a week, then spray it with serveral coats of lacquer and it will give a durable finish.I had to power wash the black junk off my deck and swing, then went with that procedure and is now 3 years and still looks great.

Paris,
try a small town hardware store for the cheese grater or a farm store or mill.

We have looked everywhere for over a year to find one like that. The grater sizes are the perfect size for salads and it fits nicely in a drawer. The only ones available that we have found are the big boxy ones or they are real small and are not conducive for production. When I grate cheese I want be able to hold it with a big handle and I don't want to dink around. I want to make short work of it. wink.gif

Paris that dresser is awesome. but you do not want that kind of wire whip for pastry dough. You need a pastry blender which has a long handle about the width of your hand and a row of blades that loop from one side to the other of the handle. some have wires and others have a metal band that is cut in strips and then the strips are turned sideways so they have a cutting edge. you can get them at walmart or some place like that. That wire whip he has will whip cream and eggs real well but not pastry dough. unless you are whipping some kind of pie filling, pudding or pumpkin or something like that, with it.

Mark If you want I can keep my eye out for that grater, I have seen a lot of them around here in the past few months.

Nas, When I learned the roofing trade, they still used wooden ladders, when we bought new ones we always used linseed oil on them.

I put some on the redwood benches of my poontoon boat 2 years ago, and a second coat this year, I just love the color! but you are right, it is a blackish-redish color but awful pretty and looks like the wood would look if it was unfinished but wet.

So do you lacquer your decks?

Herbie,
I was talking about the flat one. The one you showed is close but not exactly like the one fred has or the one we had. if you notice in the center it also is a slicer. This one although is the closest one that I have seen. I don't know why I never even thought of checking ebay. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: 4 Wheeling!

>>Paris that dresser is awesome.< <br>
Thanks LL, I like it good enough, but do you or does anyone know what styly the dresser is? I had heard it might be called a "bachelors dresser", but I'm not sure if that's what it's called. I would like to see if I can determine what type of knobs it should have. After looking at the picture I think it could use some work and I might try to kick it up a notch and replace the key hole hardware and such.

I looked for it on line for quite a while under "bachelers dresser" but never found one that has the double drawers on top like the one I have. The middle knobs don't belong there. I was looking up on line how to fix that and today I am going to try what's called a "schellac stick" to fix it.
Any ideas will help, for fixing it or knowing it's style.

On the pastry whip thing, I used to work at a food comesary for a grocery store and we made large amounts of pastry, it was aswome the bowls had wheels on them and we rolled them about,, to the mixer station and wash room they had huge whips and paddles.

Re: 4 Wheeling!

Paris, when I found that whip, there was a huge mixer too, it must have weighed a ton, when I first saw it I thought it might be a miling machine!

There was also a huge oven and some sinks and stuff, it may have come from a bakery. Another thing they had was some commercial can openers for opening the big cans, but they didn't have the wall mounts.
It all got crushed and sent to China
