This is a beautiful song written by Shannon Smith from Burns, KS. It was published by United Music Publishers in about 1999 or 2000. It is such a solemn, yet stately hymn that lends itself well to men's voices and has always been one of my favorites written by her.
No, I do not have her permission to do this. My apologies, Shannon. The mistakes are all mine.
Actually Marvie, that tone you are refering to comes more from the Ex amish than the ex H. and also from the Blue grass stuff he participates in. There is something to the H sound of things though, as I got one of those cd's from Sophie done by the Greeley folks and my totally non menno sister-in-law said right off the bat when she heard it,"those are obviously mennonite, you can tell by the way they sing." But OS sound does not come from the H, That comes from the Dutchy way of speach. Got lots of them around here whith that same kind of sound. not H either.
Thanks for the kind words guys. Its okay, Holdemanner, I have thick skin. Geez, if I were professional I would be selling my music rather than posting it on YouTube. So, I'm okay with a little critisicsm. I know who and what I am and know the limits of my talent.
Ouch, LL. Amish??
Yeah, Scott, that is me doing all the voices and strumming the chords, which is about the extent of my guitar playing. I use an application called HarmonyAssistant by Myriad. They are a French company that, IMO, is the best music program on the market. The bass and strings are done by putting the notes on a blank staff, then assigning instruments to each staff. It includes a digital recorder. The number of tracks are infinite.
Thanks for posting that, OS. I also noticed the Mennonite, or Dutch influence, but I kind of like that. It a pretty song, and you have a good voice. Nice guitar sound also. Thanks for sharing!
OS I enjoy the music that you share. I love to see someone just enjoying what they love and sharing it with other people. I was watching some Austin City Limits on youtube today and I was watching the Flatlanders. Talk about a nasal tone! They make an art form out of nasal. It doesn't have to be bad!
I asked you about this before I think, but anyway, that voice sound EXACTLY like the computer generated voice in Harmony Assistant. When you say, quote "that is me doing all the voices and strumming the chords", are you saying that is actually your personal voice that we are hearing or are you saying that you are inputting the words into Harmony Assistant and selecting the computer generated voice? If that is actually your own voice, then it is very amazing that you and those voices sound so much alike. You must have spent considerable time on Harmony Assistant?...
TR I can vouch for him, that is his real voice. And OS I wasn't tryin to slam that ex amish stuff, just point out that the guys that have to learn english to go to school have a very distinct sound that is un mistakable. I live with one also remember.
Scott
If a little constructive criticism discouraged me, I would have quit years ago.
As for my voice; if TR thinks I sound "EXCACTLY" like a computer generated voice... well, I may take a knife to my throat. The MIDI generated voices are totally unmelodic and sound absolutely AWFUL!
Technically, language has nothing to do with voice quality. Your mother tongue may give you a permanent accent, but that is all. Voice quality, such as tone, harmonics, resonance, etc. is determined by the size and shape of the throat, larnyx, vocal cords, and sinus cavities. These can be controlled by learning to manipulate the muscles associated with them. I have never received any formal training in any type of music. The tone of my voice is a result of mild asthma and congested sinuses as much as the bastardised German dialect known as Pennsylvania Dutch.
There is a lot of unrecognised musical talent among the COGM and Mennonites in general. I had the priviledge of working with United Music Publishers for a few years and saw a lot of talented songwriters. Loren Burns, a prolific and inspiring songwriter from Ontario, comes to mind as well as many others. I may do one of his songs next.
Computer programs, like HarmonyAssistant with MIDI generated instruments, are a lot of fun and have made it possible for people like me to do things musically that may not be possible otherwise. However, the sound quality will only be as good as the hardware used to produce the music. Mine is done on a cheap EMachines computer with a generic sound card. It's not even close to professional quality. But, it's my hobby and I love it!
Amen, keep on playing, singing, .... and keep on posting. Our musical ability is a journey and not a destination. I know this. I often loathe my own playing. But twenty years ago, I would have given my right arm to be able to do what I do now. Its all relative. We are usually our own worst critics. I am driven forward by the craving to be more able to spontaneously express myself on the instrument without effort and with less thought. There are always many more advanced and many less advanced than where we find ourselves on the curve at any moment. Also, playing gives access that really nice rapport that occurs between musicians. I went to a coffee shop last night where they had an open mic for everyone to share their material. Music, guitars, playing, is all we talked about all night.
I'm glad you post. It takes a little courage. It makes one feel a little vulnerable to put yourself out there like that.

I agree with what you wrote, but... I'm still curious about your answer to my question... You did not specifically respond to it. LL did, but you did not confirm what she said either.
Edit: Another reason I asked; there was more than one voice?

Well, excuse me TR, it was not my intention to ignore you when you questioned me before, so I will make a sincere attempt to be absolutely clear.
Of all the videos I have posted on YouTube, there is one I did not sing. The song is "Hear My Heart." I did compose the lyrics and music but a friend of mine performed the version on the video. All the others were performed by me using my NATURAL VOICE! I sing the melody, the tenor, and the baritone. I play the rhythm guitar and some simple lead parts. I use MIDI generated bass and strings but not the MIDI VOICES! To my ear, they sound terrible. I feel real bad for you that my voice and a computer generated voice sound exactly alike. The likely reason for this is inexpensive hardware.

Truer words were never spoken! My own worst critic? Yes, very much. My inability to play well was a source of frustration for many years. However, later in life I found great satisfaction in writing and composing. And now, I do a lot with other old geezers my age with about the same skill level and have a lot of fun doing it. Because, if its not fun, why bother?
Yeah, I enjoy open mic nights. I have participated and also enjoy just sitting and listening. Another thing we have in this part of the country is songwriting clubs. I have made lifelong friends with many in the community through them. You're right, there is a rapport among musicians that can't be found anywhere else, even in church.
Thanks for the kind words and let's hear more from you. I love that classic rock style you did in Old Age.
BTW, Rob Ickes, the dobro player with Three Ring Circle, also plays with Blue Highway. I been to one of their concerts. Fantastic bluegrass!

OS,
thank you. It just makes me curious when people don't directly respond to a question LOL
