The past week I spent guiding a total blind lady at the Kanaaskis , a place called Peter Lougheed Provincial park.It has 100 K of groom & track set trails. It was -20 every day.The lady that I guided was 54 years old, from Colorado USA.She was a very good athlete. The skiers were from allover the world.Even from England and a few from Norway. We had two races, one 10k and one 5k.She did the 10k in 50 min.and the 5k in 22 min.My job was to call out the left or right curves, or down or up hill ,and to watch so that she did not run into any one.It was quite hair raising. there were 50 blind skiers.I had to yell out track! for skier to clear the way.I had to walk her to the dining room and serve her meals, and take her to her cabin. She was there with 4 other women.
We did a lot of skiing between races. She was some what of a moody person, but was a lot of fun doing the race's.She got the gold in both races. There are 3 levels b1-b2 b3. she was b1, they are total blind,b2 can see light&darkness,b3 can see the trails. she beat the men&women in all the categories.I had to do her ski waxing so spent along time out side in the cold, but it paid off.
